The paper in this book is a bit thinner than I would like for it to be, considering the manga markers that I like to use, but overall, for the inexpensive price tag, this is a pretty good book. The paper is very white and well attached and the book opens easily and lies flat so you can draw without the cover getting in the way. Not bad.

It’s very good for beginners or someone who wants to practice with pencil. The pages are kind of thin, so it won’t really support markers without bleeding through, and the layout is exactly the same on every page.

This is a classic, original version business book about the Peter Principle that was a famous business book in the 1970's. It is about the tendency to promote people to the level where they are NOT competent. I now write a fiscal watchdog blog and give famous books on management to local government managers, so I gave this to the local County Manager after he hired a Peter Principle manager. Maybe he will get the hint.

I had borrowed a copy of this book to read years ago and finally bought my own copy. I think it does accurately describe why organizations and beauracracies are run so poorly. Many (or most) people in the organization are incompetent, and it isn't all the individual's fault. The premise is that people will rise in an organization to the level if their incompetence. Meaning individuals will do their job just well enough not to get fired, but not well enough to get promoted, so they are stuck in a position where they are mediocre in their job (at best), or grossly incompetent (at worst). This theory is brilliant in it's simplicity, and I find it overwhelmingly accurate in explaining incompetence in the workplace. This book is well worth the read.

I really love this book: very interesting to read with several real life case studies that are sometime hilarious. For example a receptionist has returned a mail to the sender to be resent by post to ensure safe delivery as per company policy. Peter classified  incompetence in 4 categories and how they manifest themselves:1. Physical incompetence. This is what we usually focus on,2. Social incompetence,3. Emotional incompetence, and4. Mental incompetence.  Usually we try to fix the physical incompetence by bringing more resources particularly HR. Then we progressively create what the author refers to as the Peter Spiral. We ended of creating the other  incompetence and find ourselves with several people that have reached the Peter's Plateau and has a Promotion Quotient of zero.Once a manager/leader reached the  Peter's Plateau, instead of carrying out his or her duties, he or she found substitution techniques. For example he or she delays decisions making through:- Downward Buckpass: a subordinate is asked to decide an issue that is really above his level of responsibility,- Upward Buckpass: examine the case until he finds some tiny point which will justify sending it to a higher level, and- Outward Buckpass: assemble a committee and follow majority vote.   When you show the above signs frequently, the person was promoted beyond his level of competence and has reached the Peter's Plateau.The good news is that there are remedies. Some of these remedies can be taken by individuals and some of them by organisations. When these remedies are well applied, most people will work at their level of competence and society as a whole will benefit.This book is a must read for HR professionals and leaders in all organisations.

Back around the time this book was first published, I was a "page" in a public library. I must have re-shelved "The Peter Principle" a hundred times, it was so popular at the time! It was some 35 years later when I finally read it. It's a concept that has been "fluffed" into a book, in order to sell books. It worked, of course - the book has sold a kabillion copies. The concept is, people are promoted to their level of IN-competence, and there they stay. I believe the perception is true for the most part, but really not worthy of an entire book. Dr. Peter made this observation, and I believe it was a good one. Probably a very good thought that could benefit entrepreneurs and bosses / supervisors / HR people. I actually bought the book for someone else, because I feel it's kind of an essential read even though it was written decades ago.

Interesting book, it will help you understand how sometimes people that don't seem to deserve it get promoted. It is also makes you think that you need to prevent to get a promotion unless you actually deserve it.

Growing up my father would always talk about the Peter Principle, and how we were doomed to be surrounded by incompetent people. He usually talked about the Peter Principle when I was having a pity party for myself because I had messed up at school or work. So when I saw this Kindle version in the daily e-book deals, I had to get it.I will confess there were times I was laughing out loud and other times a feeling of dread came over me while reading it. Peter and Hull nail it, and they do so in a humorous way. Anyone who is looking for a promotion should read this book. In fact, if you have been turned down for promotion, you should read this book. The book is very funny while being extremely candid.

The whole time I'm reading this, I'm thinking, "Jesus, this was written in the 60's and it's more truer than ever today." In every organization I've worked in, I've seen the Peter Principle in action. It's depressing and inevitable. It's likely the main downfall of modern business and I would love to work for a company that embraces the principle as a practice to avoid by restructuring the hierarchy.While the book is fantastic in explaining the different components and manifestations of the PP, it lacks detail in how to manipulate it. I found that section lacking clarity. I have read a few books on bettering oneself and it seems like there's 2 components: recognizing the problem and fixing the problem. This book leans heavily on recognizing the problem and graces the doorstep of fixing the problem. I suppose it's up to me to figure that out in my organization.I still gave this book 5 stars despite that criticism. It's a classic for business reading and a must-have for anyone looking to climb the corporate ladder based on merit. It's oddly surprising what you'll find out based on that.

In 1983 in "A Nation at Risk" the alarm was sounded that education in the United States was broken, really, really broken. Twenty years later most politicians still agree that education is broken, and if you vote for them, they'll fix education; yet year after year children leave the public school system with declining test scores, and many of these children are functionally illiterate. As any good doctor knows, you need to understand just what the problem is before making a diagnosis. E. G. West's book, "Education and the State" largely explores the history of Education in Great Britain. In looking at the problems of education in Great Britain, there is a lot of insight into what works and what doesn't work. Up until 1870, education was largely a private concern that the parents of children dealt with. Things dramatically changed in 1870 under the Foster Act, which put government into what had been a private concern. The author asks a number of good questions about why the government should be involved and are there better ways for the government to be involved. E. G. West looks into the two main arguments for the intrusion of government into education. The first is the government needs to protect children from neglectful parents. The second is the government should be involved because of the effect education has on society. In response to the first argument E. G. West looks at the data in the early 1800s and shows that by and large parents had not been neglectful. He asks why we trust the same parent to vote, but won't let them chose where to send their children to school. He points out that it is important not to let children starve, but we don't force parents to send their children to specific public kitchens. And it is important that people know the rules of driving, but we let people chose where they learn to get an education in how to drive. In response to the second argument the author shows data that education doesn't reduce crime. He explores the effect of education on democracy. One thing I found funny was that in the early 1800s many people in government were complaining that people were too literate. He explores the connections between education & equality of opportunity, education & economic growth, and education & the quest for 'common values.' The basic conclusion E. G. West comes to is government should not be so involved in education, and especially in forcing parents to send their children to a particular school. He argues strongly for a voucher system to allow people to find the solutions best for their children, and as a way to encourage schools to do a better job. This was originally written in 1965, but this is still an informative book to read. For anyone interested in the fundamental questions about just what the role of government should be in education, this is a good book for a second perspective into how having the government involved in educations creates a number of problems.

The reason that education reforms are so muddled and anemic is because most people have no idea how we arrived at our current condition. Consequently, many people consider the abolishment of the U.S. Federal Department of Education to be an extreme measure, when actually it would be mere tinkering at the fringes. This is strange since, historically speaking, the current structure of public education is a recent experiment in social-engineering wrought over roughly the past century to century and one-half. West's invaluable contribution is to unearth the origins of public education and its original claims. The first edition examined the British ontogeny, which is also important since the American ontogeny paralleled it in time and argument. Be sure to get the later editions which specifically include an eye-opening look at the American evolution. If you only read one book on education in your entire life, read this book.

I actually got this book for my daughter. She teaches fourth grade - state school, just like my generation attended. The state school system only feeds the left side of the brain. Home schooling or any one of a number of the great private schools that are in northern Cal., is what she's planning on changing to come this next fall. She was VERY pleased with this book.

David Finkel is brilliant in the way he methodically breaks down how to get out of running in circles as an entrepreneur. In this book he lays out very clearly and powerfully what to do in three different stages of your business's development. One of the most outstanding aspects of his work is the simplicity with which he approaches the whole thing. Mark Twain once wrote, "If I had had more time, I would have written a shorter letter." David clearly took the time to develop a simple, elegant straight-forward, doable approach to getting out of the rat race as an entrepreneur. He writes about all aspects of building a real business so it doesn't run you... he covers how anyone can add people to your team, even if you think you can't afford to.For myself, I always thought that I was the only one who could do XYZ in my business. Through David's book as well as his workshops, I have learned there is a process to breaking down everything. He excels in creating systems that work for the smallest one-person company up to multi-billion dollar companies. I highly recommend this book and David's training courses. He basically gives you the knowledge you would learn in an MBA, but only the stuff that you actually need.

David Finkel addresses head-on the pervasive problem I noted during my stint as a business consultant – business owners invariably get so caught up in the day-to-day aspects of their businesses that they lose sight of their original intentions. It’s not uncommon for them to feel trapped by the very businesses they thought were going to free them up. The statistics are that most businesses we start are fairly small – only about 6% gross more than $5 million annually. The average business owner works 52 hours a week, and 20% of us work 7 days a week. We had more free time in our 9-5 jobs! How do you fix that?Whereas I would help people realign with their original intentions when founding their businesses, David takes it a step or two farther and helps them realize their true desire was to start something that could develop a life of its own and allow them to step aside to do something else, whether that’s to create a new business, retire, or continue on in a manner that doesn’t make the company reliant upon them any longer. Instead, most of us have created something that depends almost entirely upon us. That’s why he calls what we’ve created for ourselves a “job”, and he wants to help us transition from that into making it a business. There are steps to go through to do that and he lays them out very clearly.While ultimately this book could be an advertisement for his firm’s consulting services (and I would consider it when my business grows to that point; I have met many people what have multiplied their companies’ sales and their own incomes, all while increasing their free time), this NOT one of those books that give tons of teasers for you to contract them to find out the “real” story. It stands on its own. One of the guiding principles he teaches is to always give a lot of value in every contact, and he does in this book. You may end up wanting to subscribe to his free email or attend one of his free seminars or webinars; lots of value in those as well. You don’t need to, however. This book is worth it on its own - if for no other reason than it gives you a new perspective as to what is possible with your business. It’s much more than that, though. It lays out the steps for you to get there. I recommend it to all my entrepreneur friends, and to you, too.Hope this was helpful.

This book got me to re think the way I do business. I own a service-based company and for the longest time, have been toiling away at trying to make money. I have built a "job" instead of a business. I am not quite finished with reading the book because I am re reading as I go through the book to make sure I am following the most important aspects and recommendations the book provides.

I've been in business for almost 20 years listening to coaches and reading business books. The concepts here around growing the business while creating personal freedom are simple, yet really groundbreaking. While I've always known it's the direction I was heading, it's been challenging and this provides the blueprint. I highly recommend!

Just downloaded and read the Kindle edition of Build a Business, Not a Job. My expectations were high because I had read David Finkel's last book (Scale) and fortunately, they were met. David has a great writing style and really knows the subject matter. He comes across as someone who has been a successful entrepreneur, not just a theorist. There is a lot of great information for the business owner (or would-be owner) but the bottom line is that David tells you how to build a business that is profitable and scalabe. If you want to be both happy and successful in your venture - do yourself a favor - read the book and follow the advice.

The author does a good job indicating the steps to follow in order to create reliable systems that will allow you to have free time and let your business grow by itself. It motivated me to continue with my plans on creating a business and now I got the knowledge to have enough time to create another one and then other.It's worth the time to read it again every couple of years.

Great book by David Finkel... Especially for business owners interested in getting some time off while having their business run even better with them gone! I recommend all David Finkel books!

I used the principals in this book and became a business owner in a couple weeks! I already owned the business but set up my managers and book keepers so I don’t have to be there all the time. Went from 60 hours a week to 1 hour a week in the building and a couple minutes looking at the reports a day!

First of all, it's undeniable that this workbook is aesthetically pleasing. For someone who loves a pretty planner to feel more on top of your life, think of You Goal, Girl (and its companion Common Cents) as an essential extension of your planner. Your planner contains your schedule; your goal setting workbook contains your goals and the progress you've made towards them. I'm SUPER type A so I really appreciate everything having its place; structure helps keep my brain organized.But even better: it's more than JUST a blank workbook. The authors give consistently good advice for working towards and achieving your goals throughout the entire book. So if you run out of steam or motivation or hit a rough patch in the year, it's as simple as turning the page and reading their words of wisdom to get you back on track.I also love how the whole book is undated -- so even though it could ideally be used throughout an entire year for multiple goals at the same time, it could also be used periodically on and off as you are working towards different, big goals throughout your life.This book makes you excited to set goals, motivated to start them, and encourages you to reward yourself for both big and small victories. It is great for anyone: young or old, students or professionals, man or woman.

Need a goal setting planner that is both beautifully designed and totally practical? The authors have created a fun, engaging, and incredibly helpful goal setting book that will certainly appeal to young women who are building their best lives. I am not sure what my favorite parts are--the down-to-earth tone or well-designed workbook pages. The authors break down the goal setting process in easy-to-complete steps that get at the heart of what the reader needs to do to achieve their goals. I especially like the Habit Tracker pages because, as I know from teaching first-year college students, setting goals is not enough to achieve them. You have to build in daily habits that help you succeed. I started working on my gratitude log first because I loved the concept of recording something I am thankful for each day of the month and it helped me focus on what I really want to achieve. While I personally love using the workbook, I can also see how it would appeal to my college students as well.

I purchased this as a gift for a young professional. One of my greatest mentors always taught me to never confuse effort with results. While this book isn’t as blunt as my mentor, I felt it did a great job of helping someone learn how to focus their energy to accomplish their goals. The workbook process of breaking down your goals into manageable action items to help guide you through what it takes to accomplish your goals is extremely helpful. This is a fantastic book for young adults!

This book was one of the most useful books I’ve owned. This is a book you don’t just read once. You will reference it and build from it. Very well done. I wish I had a book like this years ago.

I purchased two copies of this book (along with their book on Budgeting) for my 20-something daughters. I found both books to be very well written and excellent resources for young adults still learning about goal setting and budgeting as they mature into adulthood.

I received an early review copy of this book and was surprised a little by the format. There is no shortage of books and resources out there to inspire us to be better people, and there are tons of books that allow you to plan your year and stay on top of your schedule, but this book surprised me in how it fills an important gap - how to get where you want to go.Growing up, you have a sense of who you want to be, like a picture of your future self at work, or out at a nice restaurant with friends, but especially in a job market where people are expected to frequently change professions, how you go about getting to become a person who is personally and professionally satisfied is far from straight forward unless you pursue a specific academic track.You Goal Girl is set up not as a passive reading experience to inspire you, but as a practical exercise that you go through to provide some structure and process. The idea is that if you go through the steps in YGG, you will be able to better achieve your goals by setting them more concretely then laying out the specific steps you need to begin taking. In my experience many people that have vague ideas about what they want end up wallowing in regret that they could have done something more. This book is made to prevent that. It forces you to- Write down your goals.- Prioritize your goals.- Build a plan to achieve each of those goals over time (not immediately)- Structure your time so that you use it better and appreciate downtime more.- Take time to be grateful for what you have achieved.- Continually reevaluate your progress.Superficially this is all intuitive, but it's surprising how much help we all need to stay focused in a world that is so filled with distracting things. You Goal Girl provides process I wish I had used when I was younger, as it would have removed a lot of the anxiety I had about the uncertainty of the future, and leavened some of my endless optimism with practical advice about the things that can end up going wrong.YGG is a great a great workbook and process for women (or men for that matter) who are seeking to improve themselves and achieve long term goals. Highly recommended.

I bought this book for my grand niece who just adores Dora and could count to eight in Spanish before she turned two just from watching her show. This book is sturdy and shows in parenthesis the annunciation, so an adult can help a younger child say it correctly (and both learn at the same time). The English equivalent is also written and for each number as it counts up to 10, they learn the names of different fruit too! Very happy.

This book is just what I was looking for-for my 20 month old. With regular books that have paper pages, the pages tend to get ripped when he uses the book. With this one he can turn the pages, it's a short simple book for him to learn to read and for us to read to him. It has the sentences in both English & Spanish.

Purchased for my Grandaughter so try to teach her to count. It is very helpful as it is in English and Spanish. She now counts in English and then finishes in Spanish. Quite a good book for a two year old.

This is a fun book for counting 1-10 in both English and Spanish while learning the names of different fruits. Simple, but effective and my daughter really enjoys it!

This book is a recounting of an elephant hunt that PHC took in the late 1980s. This edition is a nice hardback with lots of color photos. The DVD entitled Hunting the African Elephant with Peter Capstick could be considered a companion to this book (the safari described in this book was filmed - man of the scenes in the book are duplicated on film). The story covers PHCs tracking of various elephants, some of the daily ups and downs of camp life on safari, and a dramatic showdown at the end. There is a wealth of information in this book about a wide variety of topics beyond just hunting elephants. Capstick discusses the Bushmen of Southern Africa and how contact with modern society is dramatically changing thier culture, the poison used by the Bushmen on their arrows (it comes from grubs!), the dangers of the puff adder (what a nasty snake), the synergy between hunting and conservation, the effect that a .470 Nitro Express round has on a termite hill (!), and a bit about the anatomy of elephants. One of the less favorable reviews of this books states that it is less `exciting' than some of his earlier works. I would generally agree with this in the sense that this book is not filled with harrowing stories about hunting and safari that verge on tall-tales (although the first chapter about the leopard hunt is about as close as anyone is going to get and survive). It is a more measured, realistic recounting of a relatively modern safari. If you are looking for stories about dangerous encounters with big game, PHCs earlier works are probably more your cup of tea. If you want to know what it would be like to go on a modern safari without all the hyperbole associated with hunting dangerous game, this may be exactly what you are looking for. This is a good, if not uniquely outstanding, story of safari hunting.

It was great to get all the clear photos of Capstick. This book is packed full of them. I rate it in in the top three of Capsticks books. Death in the Long Grass being number one Death in the Dark Continent Number two. If you get this as you're first Capstick book it will be nice because you will be able to put a face with the name in the other books. Iive read about 9 of his books and only have two more left to read. They are all good.

Peter H. Capstick and Peter Allison write about the same animals in the same countries. But their stories are very different. In Allison's world the charging elephant stops at the last moment, in Capstick's world it doesn't. It's good to know both. You learn something from both. I have nothing but contempt for shooters who come to Africa and are driven to a spot from which they can safely shoot animals while surrounded by armed guides. The whole "hunt" may take just a few hours. I've seen Americans "hunting" this way in South Africa. I greatly respect people like Capstick who risk their lives. And know how to tell stories with important details, like the fact that you need bloodshot eyes because animals can see clear eyes from a long distance.

Excellent book. Having hunted Namibia recently, this book is a very accurate rendition of the countrys topography.

I really enjoyed this book. While it was not as action packed as some (most) of his other writings I think Mr. Capstick managed to weave together an overall very enjoyable story. Also I really liked the pictures, and how often do I get to have something in common with my four year old like that?! Seriously though, another great read.

This book is definitely not vintage Capstick. Apart from the first few pages it was a waste of time, unless one is Interested in the habits of bushmen, and their activity.Kind of like watching paint dry.

Having hunted within 60 miles of Bushmanland 4 times as well as having visited the commercial San village, this title was a pleasant reminder of Namibia and its people. Another hit for Hathaway. Those of us who are like-minded miss you Peter!

I enjoyed the characters that Mr. Capstick has come across both human and animal. I am also impressed with his thoughtful opinions on hunting ,poaching, and true conservation.
