Wonderful book, wonderful author. The story is a tribute to all of the parents who worked like dogs, sacrificed for us, and raised and educated our generation so that we might enter the professional world with strong values and lots of love, no matter how far from home life took us. Eli Evans makes all of this abundantly clear, so clear that the passages about his parents' deaths bring tears to your eyes as if you were reliving the loss of your own parents.

I chose this book for a specific reason - I am going to play Miss Daisy in an upcoming production of "Driving Miss Daisy" and this book was invaluable in understanding the life of this Jewish woman in the South, 97 years from the end of the 19th Century. It is engagingly written, with some focus on the author's own family, and a general history also, illustrated by actual pictures of personalities involved, and by thumb-nail sketches of many colorful characters.

Evans is a Southerner who happens to be Jewish. If you grew up in the south during the later part of the last century then this book is like greeting an old friend. Since I am not Jewish it was interesting to hear that prospective but mostly it was like going to my cousin's for a summer weekend.

Eli Evans' personal account is very interesting, and if you are looking for insight into the history of Jews in the South there are pretty slim pickings. Evans' life is characterized by privilege, coming from a family of politicians and businessmen, but his struggles to navigate his Jewish identity are compelling and easy to relate with.

The author was redundant and lacked clarity of thought in many places. Overall it was okay

I share many of Bonita Davis's good feelings about this book. It is a great collection of stories about Jews throughout the South and throughout much of American history. I particularly enjoyed the insights into the schism between the early-arrived German Jews and the later-arrived Eastern European Jews. In any case, the book is well written, but not as easy to read as his Judah P. Benjamin biography.

This is the best edition of Eli Evans work. Other editions leave out the most important information about Hebrews who were known in the deep south to be neither white nor black like these colors words we used today.

After looking for a book that describes the Jews in the South, I found this book an excellent account of Jews in the South.

Buy the paperback, or the older hardcover edition, made before university presses discovered that they could print books on xerox machines and hope nobody would be smart enough to notice the difference.

... to appreciate life in Utopia, the well-ordered commonwealth described by traveler Rafael Hythloday and reported by Thomas More. Assuming, however, that Hythloday was not prevaricating in the manner of world travelers, and that More recorded his comments accurately, Utopia sounds like a very nice place to visit but one that wouldn't suit my own peculiar temperament for permanent residence. In short, I could fully approve the governance of America and the rest of the world under the constitution of Utopia, as long as I could find refuge elsewhere.The chances are either that you, dear reader, have read Utopia ages ago in college, or that you never will. The latter would be a mistake. It's a fascinating little book, open to endless speculations as exemplified by the substantial previous reviews here in the amazoo. The lengthy introduction to this translation asks the standard anachronistic question: "why did More invent a flawed commonwealth?" This is a question many modern readers have echoed. The flaw they perceive in Utopian society is the restriction of personal freedom. No one is hungry or homeless there, no one is abashed or humiliated by poverty alongside opulence, no one lives in sloth. Crime and depravity are vanishingly rare. Equality prevails... well, except for slaves, that is. But a uniformed virtue is self-imposed, of a sort that makes most of us itchy.The editors of this volume go halfway toward answering their own question, in trying to assess More's intentions through his 'memes' -- that is, in terms of the grid of current customs and general assumptions of 16th C Europe. They are correct in revealing the cut-to-pattern predictability of More's invented society, and they are also correct in noting that More's greatest originality is in his presentation of his ideal society in the guise of a travel account, a fiction. Not by any means the first such exercise in hypothetical social planning, More's Utopia has become the classic it is more because of its literary merits than for its cogency.Most commentators have struggled with the disorderly imbalance between Book 1 and Book 2 of Utopia, the former being a lively dialogue and the latter a systematic exposition. The simplest explanation is that More didn't hold himself to the canons of academic writing of our enlightened era. He wrote the darn thing in longhand miniscule in his spare time, for heaven's sake! If the whole makes less sense than the parts, don't be surprised. That's a clue, I think, to how the best minds of the Renaissance worked.The argument against capital punishment in Part 1, and the whole analysis of criminal behavior as a symptom of societal malaise, is astonishingly 'modern' and persuasive. The debate hasn't changed in half a millennium. More's fictive spokesman was right in 1515, and he's still right. Capital punishment is indefensible both morally and pragmatically.And then Hythloday discourses, complete with marginal glosses, on "the Best State of a Commonwealth, Book 2". That commonwealth is not as unprecedented as modern readers might suppose. For one thing, there's a lot of ancient Sparta about it, and the humanists of More's epoch were well acquainted with Sparta by way of Plato, Plutarch, and other ancients. There's also a lot of monasticism, particularly of the vast and vastly successful Carthusian monastic communities of the Middle Ages, communities which managed economic production and 'diplomatic' affairs with their neighbors very much like the Utopians. The ethos of the Utopians - "that no kind of pleasure is forbidden, provided harm does not come of it" - is likewise not particularly original to More. It's in keeping with humanist efforts -- the writings of Erasmus, for instance -- to blend revived Classical philosophy with Christian orthodoxy. More's version is a 'house blend' of epicurean and stoic. It's not a bad blend; one could live by it today.Hythloday's account of 'assisted suicide' in Utopia will certainly ring bells for modern readers. It's quite humane, as he recounts it. Another delightful custom of the Utopians is that "any man who campaigns for a public office is disqualified for all of them." Huzzah! More was equally a social prophet in proclaiming freedom of religion -- "for it is one of their oldest rules that no one should suffer for his religion" -- at a time when his living peers were given to burning heretics at the stake; alas for me, however, his tolerance didn't extend to "anyone who should sink so far below the dignity of human nature as to think that the soul perishes with the body." Atheists were ineligible for public office in Hythloday's Utopia.On the troublesome side, the Utopians practice enslavement, rather as the ancient Romans did, both of war prisoners and convicted felons. They also depend on the semi-slavery of immigrants: "A third class of slaves consists of hard-working penniless drudges from other nations who voluntarily choose slavery in Utopia." Is it incumbent on me to point out the eerie similarity of this passage to affairs in our modern Land of the Free? An equally eerie parallel to hegemonic America is the preference of the Utopians for "covert action", for assassination of enemy leaders and for propagandistic subversion. The pertinent chapters of More's Book 2 could almost be a handbook for the CIA.More wrote in Latin -- rather difficult and at times imperfect Latin. We latterday humanists are at the mercy of translators and editors therefore. This Cambridge translation, by Robert Adams, is the standard of clarity and accuracy, and the explanatory notes are excellent - enough to be helpful, not so many as to be an encumbrance.

This book was written in the 1400's. Its statements on how to drain a nation of all its resources by meddling in the affairs of other countries is timeless and a lesson that the U.S. in particular seems unable to grasp. There is also a section that describes that any country with a military force can only go so long before those being trained (and their leaders) have an overwhelming need to prove their military prowess in battle; even if it means looking for a war that it has no business getting involved in. Another lesson that the U.S. in particular seems unable to grasp and learn from.

The book has the potential to be misinterpreted by readers who pull it out of its proper Christian context.A modern reader might assume that More intended to describe what the word Utopia has itself come to mean: an ideal place. Instead, More is using the medieval notion of the natural and supernatural orders to describe a place where, without any revelation from God, men live lives guided by laws formed completely according to the dictates of natural reason. This society is intended as a foil to contrast with the ostensibly Christian society of England where one would expect to see a more elevated spiritual life.Instead, Christian England is revealed to be worse than a society of men who are without the benefit of the knowledge of Jesus Christ.Once its intentions are understood the book can be seen in its true context as part of the reformation project of Colet, Erasmus and others. More wanted readers of Utopia to join in this effort to raise the moral/spiritual ethos of Europe by realizing that their laws were more barbaric than a hypothetical society which relied solely on natural reason.By pulling Utopia out of its cultural milieu and interpreting it as More's ideal commonwealth, one both misunderstands the text itself and the book's place in history as part of the Christian renewal intended by More and his fellow reformers.

Great for what it is - introduction to science for young kids (4-5 year old). It covers one topic per page in a very basic way. After finishing this workbook we moved to Daily Science Grade 1, which is still basic enough for a 5 year old to grasp but much more thorough.

This is my first year homeschooling so I wanted to find some east to follow science books. I was drawn to this book because it was affordable, user friendly and follows common core standards. However, it is so basic! My son finds it to be quite boring. We can easily finish 5-6 pages in 10 minutes or so. If you have a more advanced child or just one who is really into science, look for a more advanced book.

We use these to supplement our home school activities. We LOVE DK Workbooks. Very clear, concise instructions, great pictures, charts for tracking progress, and I LOVE the perforated pages, however I've found over 2 years of purchasing these books that occasionally one book won't be perforated and that makes it a little harder but still completely love the books and work.

This book is exactly what I expected. It is not science experiments! This is basic science worksheets about plants and animals and a little about your body very good kindergarten science class worksheets

Lots of coloring oppurtunities with great information targeted at just the right level for begining kindergarteners. Lessons are short which is perfect for this age. Love this series!

All-in-all, the DK Science Workbook is a good product, but it doesn't dive too far into the subject. My daughter has fun with the lessons though. I'm happy with it.

All DK workbooks have made it easy to teach my daughter the essentials. Best homeschooling books I have found that are easy to work with and my daughter doesn't feel overwhelmed. I will continue to buy these workbooks!

For the price I wasn't expecting a whole curriculum. It is a great basic outline of science for a young child. My 4 year old loved it we worked through it all in a week because she found it fun. Probably would have finished it in a day if I let her haha

Mitch Stamm is an instructor with the International Baking & Pastry Institute at Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island. Mr Stamm was a professor of mine at Johnson and Wales and as soon as I saw this book I had to buy it. I highly recommend this book for anyone in the Culinary industry; pastry or not. A wealth of information and written by a true master.

The step by step instructions were fab and the interviews added a little more flavor to an already great book. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting more than just a cookbook.

It provides a wealth of information including recipes and just sound, solid advice from industry professionals. It has a great flow and is very easy and fun to read. I really enjoy the book. Nice to read the stories of famous chef's. I too have questioned some of the measurements as well. I have made the macaroons in the back of the book. Tells you you need 7 egg whites. But tells you to only use 6. I new to use what looked right. And they turned out good. Taste yummy!!!!

An awesome start to a new series by Terri Reed! Taking place in the Colorado Rocky Mountains where an innocent treasure hunt turns deadly. A search for young Brady Gallo leads danger right to the home he shares with his sister Maya. With the help of mounted patrolman Alex Trevino, they must stop whoever is behind the attacks before any more lives are at stake!I love the premise of this with mounted patrol officers, something you don't see too often in books. Not only that, but the draw and mystery of finding real buried treasure by following clues placed in a newspaper ad each week. Reed brought the beauty of the mountains to life for me, painting a picture in my mind. She also brought danger to the forefront with attacks blindsiding both Maya and Alex. So many suspects I never knew who was behind them! The strong family dynamics between Maya and Brady was refreshing to watch. She wants nothing more than to protect him from a world that doesn't always understand those who are different and he wants to push the bounds a bit to become more independent. There's a little push & pull there but you can definitely see the love they have for one another. Alex is a true gentleman and hero; trust worthy, protective, loyal and has inner battles of his own he must overcome. Those just make him more appealing in my mind! Both the hero and heroine resist falling in love for reasons you'll find out by reading this. The suspense is just the right pace for me & the level of mystery makes this a puzzle I wanted to figure out right along with them. All in all, a great book for suspense lovers who also like a faith thread seamlessly woven throughout . A well written story of Maya putting her life on hold while she cares for her brother after loosing their parents. Brady has Downs but is very functional. It is still had for Maya to let him be normal but is she afraid for herself or him. Deputy Sheriff Alex Trevino helps find Brady and rescues Maya when treasure hunters become too set on finding the treasure. Terri handles their greed and the love between brother and sister very well. Maybe Alex can help Maya to give her brother a little more freedom.

I loved this book!! The suspense, the love and caring of Maya for her brother, Brady, Alex trying to protect them with new dangers at every turn, the characters and story was amazing!I received a complimentary copy for an honest review, and my honest review is ‘it’s great’. I’ve read it twice. Terri Reed is an excellent author.

I loved these characters! Maya is a very loving sister to her teenage brother, Brady who has Downs Syndrome. Brady was a wonderful young man and I really liked him. He was sweet, kind and very determined to do the right thing. There is a big treasure hunt in the mountains set up by an eccentric old man and things are going crazy up there in the mountains! There are bad people who are willing to do anything to get that treasure. Sweet Brady loves treasure hunts and he gets involved in all the hoopla. He gets hurt in the mountains and Maya gets hurt trying to find him. Alex is a deputy for the mounted patrol in the area! I really enjoyed learning more about the mounted patrol. When a man is found dead in the mountains, Alex is assigned to the case. The care that Alex takes with Maya and Brady is very special. Alex has had a tough past but he's trying to get past it by having his dad live with him. I enjoyed the whole story and the characters and I certainly hope there are more books that will continue with the secondary characters in the sheriff's departments because I liked them too!I received a copy of this book from the author but no review was required! I really enjoyed this book! A brother and sister against the world - until the Sheriff comes to help. A unique look at families with high-functioning special needs kids and the transitions that come with age and maturity. I loved that the characters were so independent and so supportive of each other. Nice and suspenseful - just when you think you know "whodunit," more information and characters enter the picture to keep you guessing.I received an arc in exchange for an unbiased review.
