As a life-long fan of old-time baseball who's read extensively about Babe Ruth's life and his impact on the game, I was expecting merely an enjoyable read when I picked up Jane Leavy's latest baseball biography. I had thoroughly enjoyed her earlier biographies of Sandy Koufax and Mickey Mantle and figured her take on the Babe would be equally lively and entertaining but wouldn't be able to offer much in the way of new information or analysis given the extensive volume of prior studies of Ruth's life and career. But I was pleasantly surprised to find there's a great deal in this book that is new, particularly the cultural analysis that Ms. Leavy weaves through the various stops along the 1927 postseason barnstorming tour that sets the stage for her story. She conveys the impact Ruth and his manager Christy Walsh had on popular culture, foreshadowing the celebrity-obsessed society that followed them. Equally interesting are Ms. Leavy's insights on Ruth's character, including his early life at St. Mary's and the bitter disappointment following his retirement as a player of being excluded from the game that truly meant everything to him. In addition, the interaction between Ruth and Walsh Ms. Leavy describes is fascinating, particularly Ruth's anti-authoritarian instincts and Walsh's management of them. Ms. Leavy has written a unique and insightful interpretation of Babe Ruth's life and career that anyone interested in baseball or the cultural history of the United States over the past hundred years will enjoy immensely.

I've thoroughly enjoyed Jane Leavy's previous baseball books but I found this book on Babe Ruth to be found wanting. It is not a traditional biography of Ruth from beginning to end but a mixture of episodes in The Babe's life certainly not in any chronological order. Simply put you are going to be told much more about Babe Ruth than you really care to know, much of it mundane.Much of the book deals with newspaper reports of well-known sportswriters from the Babe's time period which is okay with me. The period dealing with Ruth's illness was also well-done. I found myself reading about the first one-hundred pages and then started skimming the book from that point onward until I got to the part dealing with the end of his life.I bought four copies of the book, three of which I will give as gifts to friends. If I had to do it all over again I would buy only one and let it go at that. I'm sorry but I was disappointed with the book.I found one mistake at the very beginning of the Acknowledgments. Bobby Thomson hit his Shot Heard 'Round the World on October 3, 1951 and not on October 4 as the book states.

This book is a gem. The Babe is portrayed in the context of his era and his life is examined, if not explained, with a sensitivity to his early years. Well researched, it also debunks many of the myths that surrounded him. It is a great story and the fact that it is not a boring chronology makes it stand apart from the ordinary sports biography. It is organized around a barnstorming tour but relates back to Babe's beginnings and it holds together well. If you want to know what Babe Ruth did on the baseball field, you can read plenty of other books. If you want some insights into who Babe Ruth was and how he grew into an icon, you will want to read this one.

I just finished reading "The Big Fella: Babe Ruth and the World He Created" by Jane Leavy. On the surface, this is a book about the barnstorming tour Babe Ruth took with Lou Gehrig after the World Series in 1927. However, the author cleverly uses this as a framework upon which to tie in stories from his birth, youth, life in St. Mary's, introduction to professional baseball, drinking, womanizing, and of course, playing with kids and hitting home runs -- and some of the details of Babe's life have been badly distorted in the myths of pop culture over the years. This work is thoroughly researched (it took the author 8 years to research and write it), well organized, well documented, and very well written. As a lifelong baseball fan, I thought I had the basic Babe Ruth story straight in my head -- I was only partly right, and I learned a great deal reading this engrossing book. I would be remiss if I did not mention the appendices -- Ms. Leavy not only does the obvious and summarizes the Babe's baseball statistics, but she also goes much deeper into the story and summarizes the Babe's personal finances, and goes to show how much the Babe profited from Christy Walsh's management. She goes on to document all of her sources in detail -- hundreds of interviews with family, relatives, teammates, friends, etc. -- and explains how she was able to set the record straight (e.g. on Babe's birth and early years). Any aspiring young writer would do well to read these appendices in detail, because in them they will find the blueprint of how to properly research a subject thoroughly enough to be able to write on it knowledgeably. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

If you are looking for a conventional chronological biography you may be confused by this book. It is very much a biography but it is expressly nonchronological, designed around a three-week barnstorming tour following the 1927 World Series. It tells the day-by-day story of this trip, with wonderful period details, but it also weaves backward and forward, from turn-of-the-century hardscrabble Baltimore to 1920s New York and beyond. It explains why Ruth was a transformative ballplayer, but the focus is on how Ruth advanced and in many ways created the culture of celebrity, and why you can draw a straight line from Ruth to the cultural icons of today. It also introduces (at least to me) the character of Christy Walsh, the agent-cum-impresario who steered Ruth away from imminent disasters and helped mold the public persona. Leavy is a gifted writer, always open to the anecdote (and there are many great ones) but also focused on the heart of her story.So unlike most sports book this is not a snack, or even a dessert. It is a satisfying meal, one that will linger in the memory for a long time.

This is outstanding. It cost nine bucks, I read it in 45 minutes, and I picked up four or five interesting tips/perspectives that I hadn't thought of before. You can look at the table of contents and say "ok, I know all that already," but there are some really interesting things he points out just in the intro that had never occurred to me.It's also pretty funny. I thought it would be corny, but he's genuinely funny/irreverent.

Suggested by a friend, this has some practical, down to earth habits to follow to either improve at golf...or at least know why you suck. Most of the ideas I have followed, but there were a few that could be real gems, time will tell, This is a quick, easy read that is somewhat like get razzed by a buddie. Bottomline, you may still suck at golf, but at least you'll have an idea why!

Very short book, but filled, cover to cover, with tips so common sense that you've probably forgotten them, if you've ever really thought about them at all. The humor with which it's written makes it a breezy read and, even if you don't magically come away from it with a sub-70 game, you'll definitely come away with some jokes you'll tell your buddies on the course, probably too many times. But hey, it's refreshing to stumble across a book from time to time that reminds us this is something we do for fun.

Very funny. Very informative. Very true! I hate to admit that last one but the truth hurts. I reaffirmed some things that I already knew and I learned new things that have helped me embrace my “suckiness” and shaved some strokes off my score. You will still suck at golf after reading this book but you will laugh and take comfort that you are not alone.

Pretty good informative book! Each chapter goes over a common mistake that golfers make and how to correct it.

An easy enjoyable read to remind you of all the "mistakes" one can make on a golf course. I look at this book and think of one word - reminders. Humorous at times and it does make some good points on things to remember about the game - strategy (do you have one?), practice, chipping, etc.

Gave this to my dad who golf for Christmas and of course the second he read the title he burst out laughing! I choose this book because it actually kept my attention when I was reading the couple pages displayed to you, my dad read a couple after he opened it and was really enjoying it as well! Definitely recommend.

Some golfers like it, some hate it because of the title. I used this as a white elephant gift for our company Christmas party. We have a lot of golfers in our company and I thought it would be a great gift. I love the title! Turns out the book is supposed to actually help the golfer improve. Win, win.

My toddler loves this book.

Let's be clear- I personally do not love this book. I personally am so and totally beyond over this book. I personally don't understand why anyone's writing about the alphabet in a coconut tree. I personally am a bit concerned that all of these little ones are running free up a coconut tree with no supervision. I personally think "a" has a bit of an attitude. But my 2.5 year old LOVES it. Beyond loves it; we have TWO copies of this book. I have one in my room on her shelf and she has one she's loved to destruction in her bedroom. She can kinda "read" it- she can tell you the entire story even if it's not in front of her. And she loves that all of the letters are in the back. I'm fairly sure I can thank this book for the fact that she knows her upper case and lower case letters. Every bedtime ends with this story ( I don't even read it anymore- I have it memorized.) There are no fights when the lights go off because the sun goes down on the coconut tree.

My 3 month old is captivated! I'm not sure if she's making the connection to the letters, words, or the fact that I'm reading it, but she scans every page! The board book is sturdy and easy to handle, so I let my girl hold it and play with the pages as well.

This was my 6th copy! All 5 of my kids had their own copy. While FaceTime reading with my granddaughter who lives in Tennessee while I live in Colorado she was complaining that her little sister wrote in her favorite book and she opened it to the front to show me. I burst out laughing because it was actually my youngest son’s (now 17!) book from when he was a kid. He had scrawled Joseph on the front inside cover (nearly illegible as he was 4! and only a mom would recognize it!) and Sophia was irritated thinking her little sister was disrespecting her books. Turns out my daughter had raised my storage container looking for her Nancy Drew books, but came across Joseph’s box! I immediately bought Sophia her own!

Aren't youngsters learning to read today SO much younger than most people of my generation ever did? Still amazes me that our grandsons learned their letters with such lightning-fast speed (then again, so many of today's children's shows are educational, as opposed to the simply amusing cartoons we had.) Our 3 year old had already been quite proficient with his ABC's when we gave him this book on his birthday, but we'll get a "2-fer" out of it - a fun reinforcement for him that he'll begin to actually read with, and it'll be waiting in the wings for his 1 year old baby sister (not to mention the newest family addition we recently found out about, due to arrive next May!)Very simple story in that all of the (lower case) letters are racing to the top of a coconut tree, once they're all up there the tree becomes top-heavy and - "Chicka chicka... BOOM! BOOM!" - bends from the load, they all come tumbling out, incurring normal childhood-type ailments (skinned-knee, stubbed-toe, loose tooth, out of breath, tangled and knotted up, looped, stooped and "twisted alley-oop", etc.) The parents, aunts and uncles (capital letters) come to their aid as the tree trunk straightens back up. BUT... when the full moon comes out that night, "A" sneaks out of bed and - as children will do - double dares them all back up to the top of the tree! The book ends with a 2-page spread of all of the letters, upper and lower case next to each other - a terrific tool to help youngsters recognize both forms, and part of the fun are the rhymes and fun tongue-twister expressions interspersed throughout (i.e. Skit skat skoodle doot/Flip flop flee.) Super cute little book!You can probably imagine that - having babysat for three of my four grandchildren for 7 years prior to my daughter-in-law becoming a stay-at-home-mom - we have MANY board books included in the large children's library we've built for them over those years - typically, if they're board book versions of a previously released book, they're greatly ABRIDGED versions. I have to say that not only is this one of the highest quality-constructed board books we've purchased, but at 36 pages long (as compared to the hardcover's 40 pages), I think we've actually got most of the entire original book! (Obvious difference would be its size - this is @ 5-1/2" x 7" and a full 3/4" thick, while the hardcover's description lists it as 8.2 x .4 x 10.9.) And what a deal! We purchased this on Amazon for below its imprinted $7.99 US price, and are so pleased with what we received for our dollars - nice, thick pages, bright and eye-catching colors - even our 5-1/2 and 9-1/2 year old grandsons have gotten a kick out of reading this to the little ones!

A classic from my childhood, my kids absolutely love this book! They quickly got the hang of the rhythm and they love joining in with all the "Chicka chicka BOOM BOOMs!"My 2 year old loves to sing the ABCs when we get to the back of the book, where it is so nicely printed.We are in middle of creating our own chick chicka boom boom tree out of coffee cans and ABC magnets, as I saw on a preschool blog.A very wonderful addition to our homeschool classroom!

If you have never read this book to a child, I would HIGHLY recommend it! It is an ABC book, but it is written so it rhymes from start to finish. The cadence you can easily achieve is fantastic! It's so much fun to read, and for ANYONE to enjoy. We bought this book for our grand children and these are for our great-grandchildren. The fun in these pages never diminishes. It is a classic!

I have bought this book only because it was highly rated and we had it since my kid was 6 months old. Now she is about 2. I have tried reading this to her a few times, but not only I felt stupid reading this nonsense, non-existent words, and abstract graphics, but my kid never paid any attention to it.I cannot say who this book should be perfect for, but definitely not for most kids and adults. :) The graphics are ugly, there is only 1 tree and letters. Nothing else!!! Nothing that will keep the attention of your kid.The story or songs - not sure what this is, is ridiculous. "A told B and B told C I'll meet you at he top of the coconut tree." How to explain my 2 year old what is going on here? :) My kid is only 2 and even though she knows every single letter, and numbers up to 10, she is not interested at all in this book.I wish I returned it when I could.

Given that Davis never publishes the same book twice, I shouldn't have been surprised at how different "Why Art?" was her previous work. "Why Art?" is simultaneously wry and sincere. It's a formalist lark that nevertheless takes its subject matter seriously. This isn't me being clever, either. The book is clever. And it's beautifully drawn.

I found the book did not deliver on its premise. The second half of book seemed like arbitrary fill-in. Magical realism/metaphysics with no aesthetic philosophy or just nothing more to say?

It is an interesting read, but for me, it felt a little sparse, and did not quite deliver on its promise. The second half is too meta for its own good.

It starts in one place and ends up in another but it ultimately proves its point and is a fun and interesting read!

The title of the book doesn’t match its contents. The book playfully works around the questions it asks—why art?—hinting at possible answers through clever commentary and punchy story-telling. The artists’s stories are the most compelling, I think. They are fantastical, magic-realist stories, that only end too soon, but are just long enough to make you reflect on the deeper questions posed. I say the title and contents don’t match, because the questions are so direct and plain compared to the idiosyncratic way the author tackles the subject matter. A worthwhile purchase.

I expected this book to raise interesting ideas about the function of art, with illustrations to give resonance to the ideas. Instead, it veers off into an allegory of gratuitous and gleeful cruelty. I'd bought it to give to my granddaughter, and it's clearly not for her, but I couldn't think of anyone at all I'd want to burden with this book.

This book is really beautiful. I didn’t know much about it before buying it, I just went for it based on the description and author - I really enjoyed it and I’m sure I’ll turn to it again in the future.

Amazing book that really changes your perspective on art. Has great illustrations accompanied by a beautiful story and indirect analogies. I’m going to gift this to my highschool art teacher! Definitely a book all artists will appreciate! 😄

Perfect for this old couple! Fast, easy, GOOD! AND I don't have to do math!!!

I recommend this cookbook to anyone who will sit still long enough to listen to me. I originally borrowed it from the public library and loved it so much that I bought my own copy. I purchased it in May 2016 and have cooked exclusively from it and the vegetarian sequel ever since.I had found myself in a cooking rut that even Pinterest couldn't pull me out of. Online recipes are great, but sometimes they wouldn't come out like they were intended to, or pairing a main dish and a side dish was a bit of a chore, or the two of us would get tired of eating leftovers for three days straight. At the place I was in my life, I needed a book I could just cook my way through that did much of the planning for me.There are so many good parts to this cookbook. The flavors are creative and very often jaw-droppingly delicious. I love that they're vegetable-heavy and cook with whole ingredients, sometimes with vegetables that I not only tried for the first time, but are now some of my favorite vegetables because of this book. The majority of them have gorgeous pictures, cook in 30 minutes or less, and serve exactly two people, so there is very little wasted food. Since it's one pan, there are no side dishes needed to round out the meal for either flavor or substance. The author included sections at the end of each recipe with ideas to beef up the meal if you're feeling extra hungry and gave wine pairing recommendations. The back of the book groups the recipes into seasons, so you can cook with what's freshest at the moment. I've doubled recipes and served it to guests. I've experimented on guests with completely new recipes not only without issue, but with many compliments. Seriously, y'all. Praise hands and heart eyes every day for eight months and counting.The only downside I feel I must mention is that there is a fair amount of vegetable chopping required for each meal, since you're cooking with fresh produce. However, I view this more as a natural side effect than a downside. The recipes are vegetable-centric, so to me, taking the time to chop fresh produce is such a small price to pay for the nutritional benefit, and for something so flipping delicious. My spouse and I both work outside the home for 45-50 hours a week, and the lifestyle of cooking daily and eating healthfully has been completely sustainable for the better part of a year for us because of this book.One more tip I'd give to new users, in addition to reading each recipe all the way through before starting to cook and keeping in mind that eating fresh produce means a little chopping, is to cook mise en place. Lay out all your ingredients on the counter, chop your produce, prep your meats, measure ingredients into separate bowls, all before you even turn on the stove. Since the average recipe has you cooking something for less than 5 minutes before adding a new ingredient to the pan, and sometimes for even less than a minute, there is very little time to be chopping produce while you're cooking. We bought a set of little glass bowls here on Amazon that have been so helpful.Eating healthfully with minimal food waste can be fun and interesting and sustainable. I cannot recommend this cookbook enough.

Cooking is something I really enjoy and I cook 5-6 nights a week after long days at work. I buy a lot of cookbooks and find that I make one or two recipes out of them and then they get shelved. This book, however, has been amazing. I've basically been cooking through it, choosing one recipe from each section for each trip to the grocery store I make. I also have celiac, and therefore must eat gluten-free, and these recipes are easily adapted if necessary for those with dietary restrictions (she does point out those that are vegetarian or that can easily be made vegetarian). And there's wine pairings. The book is amazing.Things I like about this book:1) Most of these dishes can be made in 45 minutes or less, including prep. I may cook a lot, but it still takes me a while to prepare my mise en place.2) Meat and vegetables. Occasionally starch/carbohydrate. Perfect and healthy.3) Excellent size portions - some can be quite large, so a third portion can be saved for lunch during the workweek.4) Many of the recipes use similar ingredients (carrots, onion, celery, etc.) and you can easily plan to make 3-4 meals to use up all the produce before it goes bad.5) No dessert section. I'm so tired of cookbooks that claim to have so many recipes but 40 of them are for sugar-laden treats. Yay, actual food.This book basically cooks meals like the ones I enjoy at my most frequented, favorite restaurants. The recipes are easy to follow, she offers little tips to increase the ease and for substitutions, and seriously, once you've heated the oil in the pan, delicious food meets your plate in minutes.I really hope more books like this come to market.

I've made several dishes out of this book and they come out amazing. So far, my favorites are the Barley Risotto with Andouille Sausage and Sweet Potato (I COULD MAKE THIS EVERY WEEK AND NOT GET SICK OF IT) and the 3 Cheese Mac n Cheese (though I use cheddar instead of goat cheese as I am not a fan of goat cheese, and I cook the pasta in a separate pot anyway). The recipes are simple and they just taste SO GREAT. I love them also because they really make more than just two portions (sometimes; depending on how hungry my boyfriend and I are). They're also great for easy clean up and just having the one pot to clean. Which is great on a weekday where you really don't want to clean up all that much after working all day.

I love when I feel that I have made a steal in the purchasing of an item or found a rockin' bargain. That is what I had when I reviewed the recipes for this cookbook. I grabbed this book for $1.99 for my kindle and loved almost every single recipe. Being a newly cooking for one, but long-term empty nester and cooking for two, the full recipes that I have made in the past are no longer practical. These recipes, which were scaled down, allow me not to have tons of leftovers and, cooking for one, eat out or tons of processed food which I can't stand.The bonuses are the "extra hungry" and wine pairing tips. Lastly, the author not only offers an index of the recipes, but also a "find it fast" index with headings for vegetarian dishes, seasonal dishes and 30 minutes or less options.Meals include:Flat Iron Steak with Green Beans, Chili-Hoisin Sauce and Sesame SeedsLo Mein Noodles with Chicken, Snow Peas and Peanut SauceLemony Risotto with Asparagus, Carrots and ChivesSautéed pork chops with Sweet Potato, Apple and Mustard SauceI think the only thing I wish at this time is that I would have purchased the print copy of this book, as I don't like to bring my tablet or phone into the kitchen, especially when I am cooking. After I try a couple of the recipes, I may purchase the print copy as I have seen a couple of people comment on their disappointment with the actual recipes.

I am not new to shell scripting. I've been doing it for 20 years and have felt quite confident in it.Reading this, of course I found plenty that I knew already but there were gaps in my knowledge that I did not realize. This book is thorough in covering shell scripting and presents the material in an approachable and practical way.I highly recommend this book for new and experienced shell coders.

Succinctly:In less than 100 pages, the author gets you up and running with [Bash] shell scripting. The entire book is precise, clear, and well structured. There is no divergence from the topic or the lessons, only short tips on common errors, style, and convention. In some cases I did look elsewhere to figure somethings out, but that was my own need for differentiated instruction. As such, I enrolled in the author's course on Udemy, which is cheap (link below).If, like me, you get distracted by implementation details and are looking for a book that will teach you shell scripting from scratch quickly (or quickly tie a bunch of disparate knowledge together), then this book is for you! This book is worth every penny! I learned more about BASH scripting from this book than any previous learning material I've sunk my time into. The sections of this book are logically organized, with each new section building off of the information presented in the previous sections. The material is concise and to the point, with direct examples provided throughout. The exercises at the end of each section really help you to start using what you've learned, and the solutions provided afterwards help you to see if you are on the right track or not.While this might not be the ultimate shell scripting bible, it certainly gives you a solid foundation to be comfortable reading and writing shell scripts.I would (and do) recommend this book to everyone interested in learning shell scripting.

This book is good for both beginners and those who have been automating on the command line for a while, as it intelligently focuses on many of the most important, sometimes long-forgotten fundamentals, with the goal of helping the reader apply the 101s to solve actual real-life problems or enhance practical workflows.It's easy to pick up some bad habits, or lose knowledge, over time, of useful practices or methods, and a read of this guide followed up by semi-regular reviews will be the WD-40 to many people's squeaky scripting practices, I think no matter the level of experience.While you won't find scripting examples beyond even just 50 lines, this book is a toolbox more than a preconstructed assembly line. Its aim seems to impart wisdom on how this piece can help you in this area, and reminds us all about this other piece, which we forgot about but begs to be included in our existing workflow. And over time, this toolbox will increase the efficiency of, and perhaps even size/capabilities of our own personal assembly lines.As toolbox as it is, it's like any other toolbox and assumes that the reader knows enough about most of the individual tools and has worked with enough of them over time to make use of what's included in the box ("book").Don't buy until you've written a few of your own scripts/functions and want to take the next step in actually becoming good at this.

I saw the five-star reviews from other people. I saw that there were a limited number of people who reviewed the book. I was skeptical. I researched more, looked at the write-up provided by the author, and bought the book. The book is worth the five-star rating. The author knows how to present information well and can present information concisely. If you need to learn shell scripting, I highly recommend this book.

This book is a great starting point for someone like me who already understands the basics of using bash commands, but wants to understand the often cryptic syntax of working shell scripts (your own or those you can find elsewhere). It doesn't assume a knowledge of basic programming skills, but if you've worked with python or some other scripting type language you will be able to understand the information more quickly.The examples were very good and easy to understand. I particularly like that they provide sample answers to the exercise questions at the end of each chapter.Minus one star only for not being quite as comprehensive as it could be, but still an excellent resource overall.

Great intro to shell scripting that completely avoids trying to be funny like most nerdy programming authors. He gets straight to the point with easy to understand examples that aren't pretentiously abstract. Also, the whole book and exercises can be completed in one day and you'll feel very confident and competent in your abilities as a shell scripter afterwards. I write shell scripts for EVERYTHING now.

Very informative and easy to read with many colored tables and graphs. For the CPHQ exam, I’d advice also getting the Quality Toolbox book by Nancy Tague for better explanations and examples of the quality and process improvement tools (I also got the Janet brown quality handbook, but it’s text heavy and not that easy to read, i’d wouldn’t advice purchasing it).Tip: don’t take the free online practice exams, they are full of mistakes.

I am in the process of studying for the CPHQ exam. I love the kindle version of this book because even if I don’t have my ipad with me I can always read it on my phone. I love the features of highlighting, creating flash cards, notes, etc.The book follows the outline of the test which is great. Whenever I find a concept that I need more information on, I look it up online and enter a note. Having all my notes, bookmarks, and highlighted phrases together in one place makes studying much easier than hauling around a book!

Cleared the exam a couple of months ago. Book alone was not sufficient. I took a practice test at NAHQ. I do not have a medical background. I went through all the government websites mentioned in the book. No additional resources were needed.

The study guide was comprehensive and this is the one I would recommend as it’s published by the organization that writes the exam questions but I would also recommend answering practice questions to prepare for the test. I passed my exam.

Used this product to study for my CPHQ exam along with the test prep questions bank to successfully passed my exam on the first attempt thank God.

The only resource required for CPHQ!Caveat- need to have some experience with healthcare in a North American context

So much content packed in but super helpful!

Super small print and mind numbingly boring, but will do the job for studying.
