Shantideva is a man who appears to have acquired alien like intelligence when it comes to living a selfless life. Consider this quote from his chapter on patience: "That the Buddha's heart might rejoice, henceforth I shall be the master of myself, the servant of the world. I shall not seek revenge though the crowds stomp on my head or kill me. Let the guardians of the world rejoice." I am pretty confident I will never meet someone this ethically committed to being patient--wish I had a time machine to talk with Shantideva for a day and ask him where exactly his insights came from (each verse in that book reads like a profound insight). Perhaps all his thoughts just assembled in his mind as he delivered his famous discourse to a crowd who was skeptical of his moral integrity at Nalanda. They thought he just walked around the university not caring about anything but rest and food. There are so many poetic, inspiring and beautiful verses throughout this book--however, I discourage you to take every verse literally unless you really don't mind being trampled or killed by crowds without seeking revenge. Nevertheless, a ton can be learned from this book just by leaning in the direction of the ethical path he has written. Consider another favorite verse I have from him: "There is nothing that does not grow light through habit and familiarity. Working with small trials, I train myself to handle great adversity."

We are using this book and Pema Chodron's book 'No Time to Lose' in preparation to taking the Bodhisattva vows this spring with Mindfulness Meditation Centers. I am very grateful to have Pema's book to help with the understanding of Shantideva's prose. If you only want to purchase one book...purchase Pema's book. All of the prose verses are in her book also. As always, she points the way when there is confusion. Shantideva was a genius in his own right as well as being a true Bodhisattva.

If you decide to study Shantideva's Bodhicharyavatara, you soon discover that there are a number of translations from which to choose. And you will probably find that you need to own more than one of them because there continues to be a good deal of discussion about which of the various versions of the text is closest to the original. I like this version as much as Alan Wallace's heavily annotated translation and I think both are essential if you are studying the text with a commentary.If I had to choose, I would take this version because it was translated (a) in parallel with Kunzang Pelden's beautiful commentary on the text, (b) the translation was done within the context of a traditional teacher-student relationship, and (c) the introduction gives a great overview of the translation history and textual challenges of the text.There a number of good commentaries on the text but in the Nyingma tradition, the one to read is definitely The Nectar of Manjushri's Speech by Kunzang Pelden.

Beautiful -- an explanation of the way of the peaceful warrior. Readers might like to know that Shambhala publications has also posted a 5 session (free) video course about this book on Vimeo, with the primary translator as lecturer. Somehow I accidentally found this, and what a treasure. We really are incredibly lucky to have these materials available to us. A heartfelt thanks to those who worked so hard on this translation.

I can truly see why he said that now - the book is awe inspiring, and I don't say that lightly.There are passages that read as if someone living in 2013 America was writing them, they are that pertinent and powerful. Excellent read! The translators of Shantideva's text give the reader a history of this text and discuss both the challenges and reasoning for the way they have created this translation into English. Also, there are commentaries on the text in the chapters following the text. This a very thorough and thoughtful look into Shantideva's "The Way of the Bodhisattva". I am enjoying it immensely and highly recommend it.

If one is unfamiliar with Buddhism, this is a great book to start with. This revised edition contains updated language for the modern reader and sets forth the 'nuts and bolts' of one of the key elements of Buddhist practice - Bodhichitta. The 'what' and 'why' of cultivating this, then how one can nurture and sustain this in one's everyday life and relationships is well elaborated in clear language. The book gives relevant examples for context and practical steps, so that one can go beyond mere philosophical abstraction. If one is already familiar with Buddhism, the read is very suitable for ongoing introspection, mindfulness and nurturing wisdom at increasing levels of depth.

I agree with the other reviews that this is a terrific book. That said, you should know that its conversion to Kindle is pretty sloppy. It looks like the print edition was scanned and run through a character recognition process but then not checked for accuracy. For example, in the formula on pages 58 and 59 of the print edition for estimating the distance to an object there's a "division sign" character -- the one that looks like a dash with a dot above and below it. In the Kindle edition this is rendered as a "+". This is worse than wrong since it makes the author look like he doesn't know what he's talking about.Sadly, in my experience this sort of careless conversion is more typical than not for Kindle editions. I wonder why Amazon cares so little about the quality of its Kindle editions. And I wonder why authors and readers silently put up with it.

We did not always have GPS, and we did not always have smartphones, and we did not always know where we were. It still happens that people get lost. At the beginning of _The Lost Art of Finding Our Way_ (Harvard University Press), physicist John Edward Huth tells how there is still danger out there. He once found himself beset in fog, kayaking off Cape Cod. It had happened before, and this time, before setting out, he had noted the waves, wind, and more. He was able to use these clues to get home even in the fog, but two other kayakers were in the same fog and were not so lucky, and he subsequently read about their disappearance in the newspaper. They didn't have his ability to read the signs, and when the fog descended, they probably were completely lost and paddled seawards. His book is dedicated to them, and if Huth has his way, there will be far fewer lost hikers and sailors. There are many primitive and refined methods of land and marine navigation described here. This entertaining book is not just a summary of such techniques, but an appreciation of the pre-smartphone cultures (Arab traders, Vikings, Pacific Islanders, and those scientific types from Europe, too) that used and developed them, and a call for us to lift our eyes from our screens. Huth encourages us to leave "the bubble" of electronic positioning and take a good look around. He has lead courses to train students in primitive navigation and it works. "I have found that students can become adept at reading star patterns, following the arc of the Sun across the sky, and predicting the weather. But to acquire these skills you absolutely must leave the bubble and look at the stars, the clouds, and the Sun."What do people do when they are lost? Lost people wander out in loopy, ineffective paths that cross back on themselves. If they are observant enough to realize that they are back where they started, panic can increase. Sometimes they use folk advice to rescue themselves, like walking downhill until they find a creek that will lead downstream to civilization; if the stream goes into a swamp, they are worse off. There's a whole list of other ineffective behaviors which lost people perform besides random walks, like following any game trail or track they come across or obsessively attempting to head off in one absolute direction. Some tactics can be effective, like getting to a high point to get an overview of the territory. Huth allows technology to intrude here: a high point is better for cell phone coverage, too. Basic land navigation starts with "dead reckoning," which was good enough for Lewis and Clark. Huth says you can gain skills in dead reckoning, but that even with a compass an experienced pathfinder can expect a precision within five or ten degrees at best. Estimates of distance covered, based on speed, similarly are subject to distortion due to terrain or fatigue. Especially interesting are corrections navigators have known for centuries they had to make. Light from a star bends as it goes through the atmosphere, for instance, and is especially bent from stars that are close to the horizon; these are just the stars a navigator will be looking for, since the job in sighting with the sextant is to measure the angle between a star and the horizon below it. Navigators are not restricted to looking at the Sun, Moon, stars, and planets. If you know something about prevailing waves, tides, currents, and winds, you might be able to pick up clues to location; the Pacific Islanders were adept at this sort of wayfinding. If you are stuck at sea and don't know where you are, you might look to the sky to see land-based birds that are fishing but will soon return to land, and they can point the way. Take care not to confuse them with pelagic birds that spend all their time at sea except for nesting. In the old days, when ships and life were slower, a sailor might take a jaunt at sea with no provision for navigation except to ask passing ships about location. Readers of _Moby Dick_ will remember that it was fairly common for ships stop and have a social "gam." Even now, a navigator can get clues from spotting ships in their traffic routes, and Huth explains how even seeing airplanes in the sky can give navigational information.Huth's book is sizeable, with good diagrams and maps. He is an inspired teacher, and obviously loves his subject, one that includes cosmology, physics, meteorology, history, legends, and psychology. You may not have a chance of using any of the techniques here. Huth warns, "All of these techniques are matters of habit. Reading about them can be a curiosity, but they need to be practiced." I'm not in mind to practice them, and chances are I am never going to need them, but Huth's guide to guides is fun to read, and is a little monument to human cleverness.

'Nicely presented book but the idea behind it is very similar to one that came out a couple of years ago, 'The Natural Navigator: The Rediscovered Art of Letting Nature Be Your Guide', by Tristan Gooley, so there is quite a bit of overlap. I enjoyed Gooley's book more as it is written by someone who also has experience of applying these techniques outdoors so the subject really comes alive.Huth's book book may be better for people who are more interested in the history of navigation at sea than the 'how to's' of navigating at sea and on land. Overall I found Gooley's book more rounded and engaging. Not a bad effort though.'

Interesting ideas; made me think about what I would do in some survival situations.I am interested in the neurology of navigation, so I enjoyed it a lot.I would recommend the book to anyone who is interested in topics like landmarking, dead reckoning, nautical vs linear miles, changes in star patterns, etc.

More academia than pleasure in this this book for me. I was expecting a practical text. It is certainly informative, but if you want to go directly to the "how-to" be aware this book is more about how methods of navigation changed over time and in various locations. I have to read a lot from this book to find the useful information. But if history of navigation is your interest then this book may flick your switch.

Fantastic book. I'm only halfway through it, but highly recommend reading this if the topic is moderately interesting. It's written in a really enjoyable way, but is also dense on actual usable information and I'm learning a lot.

Years ago my sister-in-law bought this book for me, perhaps not realizing that I have a whole library of books waiting to be read. Also, the odds are heavily against other people knowing what I like in books. To my surprise, this was one of the best books I've ever read--well-written, thoroughly researched, fun to read and useful. I liked it so much that--I bought a copy for a friend! Since his passion is sailing, I think it's a pretty sure thing that he'll find it worth reading.

This is an amazing book if you tire of people relying on their GPS, and then getting lost because they don't pay attention to landmarks, etc. I find myself making notes in the margin, and I somehow feel validated by continuing to use my "Mind Map."

I wished I had purchased the book BEFORE the surgery so I could have gotten myself prepared for surgery (because this book tells you everything you need to know to get prepared and what to do after the surgery) After my dogs surgery I felt completely alone with my girl who had both legs done the same time. It is hard to go through this but with limited information from my vet I felt alone. I went and did some searching around for help and found this book! I believe this should be sold at every vet office out there that does these types of surgery to prepare people as to what to expect! it's a great book and it just walks you through everything you will more than likely encounter during the before during and after surgery. If you dog has to have this surgery BUY THE BOOK! you won't regret it

It helped me understand what was going to happen, how I needed to prepare my home, items I should consider having on hand, and the must haves. I'm so glad I had this book since my orthopedic surgeon didn't give my 1/10th of this information! Knowing how to handle swelling, and things to look for... This book helped in many aspects of this condition. Would have liked more info on supplements. A lot of this book is devoted to surgery which is not an option for many of us who can't afford the surgery, no matter how much we love our dog. Óscar Martínez writes for ElFaro.net, the first online newspaper in Latin America. The original edition of his book Los migrantes que no importan was published in 2010 by Icaria and El Faro and a second edition by Mexico’s sur+ Ediciones in 2012. An amazing book detailing the perils for migrants when they travel from the countries below Mexico on their way to el norte. I can't say enough about the courage of the writer, who put himself in extremely dangerous situations to get this information--in a country where scores of journalists have been murdered or disappeared for the same sort of reporting. Even more poignant of late, given the savagery toward journalists of those who can't take a joke and/or wish to remain in the shadows. The best of journalism--a painful read, though it should be read by everyone, especially those who are directly impacting immigration politics (well, that's you and me as well as the politicians). I hope Mr. Martinez gets heaps of awards for his skills, dedication and compassion.

This is a fantastic story with real world implications. Mr. Martinez shows us in great detail what these migrants who want to travel to the United States go through. The stories that he tell of, both as to why they want to go to the United States and their troubles really make you grieve for these migrants and hope that all of them find a way to get to the US safely. However, in our current political climate, and the incompleteness of Enrique Pena Nieto, none of this is likely to happen, but this is worth reading to get a better picture of the situation and find ways to help out. Great writing by Mr. Martinez and him being able to tell 14 individual stories to highlight the issues. Good read.

Best non-fiction look at a subculture since "Behind the Beautiful Forevers." Martinez was patient and courageous in his journeys from Central America to the U.S.-Mexico border and his reward was to be let into the world of migrants, narcos, coyotes, and bandits. It's not a bleak book, though. It's written well enough that I enjoyed the journey, even if it was a horrific journey.

This book by Central American journalist Oscar Martinez relates his first hand experience of travelling on Mexico's cross country train system with immigrants from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador who are fleeing their homelands, often not for purely economic reasons but because of the drug-trade related violence perpetrated by the Mara gangs that have been extradited from the US and which have completely overwhelmed the capabilities of the police and the authorities in their own countries. The details of their terrible journeys, continually preyed upon by the coyote gangs, by the narcos and by the Mexican police are horrifying, fascinating and heart-rending and I challenge anyone to read this book without sometimes having to take a deep breath and wipe away the tears of anger and frustration that mankind is capable of treating his poorest and most vulnerable brethren in this way. With one of the leading contenders for the US presidency threatening to build a wall all the way along the border, this is a very raw, real and timely look at what has already long been happening on the other side of the border.

This is a brilliantly written, deeply moving account. While reading it, I often thought of George Orwell's "The Road to Wigan Pier" and "Down and Out in Paris and London." The author shows not only wonderful writing talents, but also stunning courage and a deep, no-nonsense compassion in chronicling the movement of desperate migrants from CentralAmerica across Mexico. No one who reads this can doubt that these desperate people are refugees, fleeing a chronic, endemic violence which our American government did much to create. The migration process will never look the same to you after you read this. A remarkable, deeply humane, and achingly sad book.

This is a well-written and engaging book that gives great insight into the conditions experienced by Central American immigrants during the long and dangerous journey to the United States and what they hope will be a better life. Martinez also explores the many negative impacts on Mexican society brought about by the increasing involvement of narcotics cartels in the immigration pipeline.

Heartbreaking story, well told, much like Enrique's Journey, that begs the question, how does a legitimate government allow this kind of depravity to go on? And rhetorically, when will the United States stop its insidious practice of meddling in the internal affairs of other countries and destroying any chance they might have of attaining political stability?For starters, all you dopers need to stop facilitating this violence and financing these narcotraffickers by purchasing illegal drugs. Second, voters need to change the immigration and drug policies in this country radically. Obama and Congress love mucking around in the Middle East yet pay so little attention to the house on fire next door to us. This is an excellent book covering what has become sickeningly familiar territory to anyone who reads up on Mexico and Latin America.No one should have to flee from their home to another country just to be safe and have a decent life.. The United States should consider financing the migrant shelters along the border rather than these ugly, useless walls and tens of thousands of border patrol agents. What a neurotic nation: if a policy fails miserably, increase funding for it.

I won't forget this book. Provides incredible insight into the gauntlet that Central American and Mexican migrants must run for a chance to make it to the US. The author talks a lot about the changes that happened recently but I am left with the impression that the situation is always changing. There is a torrent of migrants and drugs flowing thru Mexico that creates its own sick and shifting eco-system.Brilliantly and bravely reported.

Being born and raised in the US, these stories about the struggles of those enduring lives and subsequent journeys of hardships to emigrate to the US give me reason to pause to reflect on just how fortunate my life has been. Through no choice of my own, through complete random chance, my life has meandered through a world of relative prosperity and plenty. It's nearly unimaginable to learn of the hardships endured and lives lost in pursuit of the dream many of us US born people take for granted.

This book takes us back to the movie, and explains to us the many aspects of science that this movie touched on, including: the biology and geophysics behind the dooms-day scenario at the beginning of the movie, the astrophysics and gravitational physics of black holes, the science of planets, and the (very wild) scientific speculations on wormholes and quantum gravity.I watched the movie together with a group of physicists and astronomers; afterwards, we had a lively debate about whether many details in the movie was really plausible, as Dr. Thorne had promised to us previously. After reading this book, I can see that Dr. Thorne had (of course!) realized most of the problems that we were debating. In places when astrophysics or planetary science were involved, Dr. Thorne provided the (sometimes very unlikely but nevertheless possible) scenarios that our difficulties might be resolved. In places involving speculations in fundamental gravitational and quantum physics, Dr. Thorne provided motivations from the frontiers of theoretical physics. It was great fun to read these details.Finally, this book reveals the untold story in the movie: it all started from the detection of gravitational waves!!!

The imagery in Christopher Nolan's movie Interstellar is breathtaking in IMAX. One of the most memorable scenes is of the massive black hole named Gargantua. In this scene we view something that mankind will not see in reality in the foreseeable future. In Kit Thorne's book the reader learns that in making the movie Nolan stayed as close to known science and scientific speculation as possible. This science can be difficult, but Thorne writes well and provides a number of diagrams that illustrate the points he is making. Prof. Thorne worked on the movie from it's early beginnings in 2005, when Christopher Nolan's brother Jonathan worked on the early screen play. At one time Steven Spielberg was slated to direct the movie. We can be glad that he dropped out, because he would not have made the breathtaking movie that Nolan did. Thorne covers the science from the beginning of the movie to the end, where Cooper falls through the black hole into the tesseract structure. As Thorne warns at the start of the book, some sections can be heavy going. If you don't know what an event horizon is, the book may be especially difficult.What makes black holes so difficult is that their physics is far outside any normal experience.For example, at the end of the movie, Cooper, in one of the landing craft, falls into the black hole. In a massive black hole the tidal forces (the difference in gravity between your toes and the top of your head) are small so he can survive the trip across the event horizon.Thorne mentions several times in the book that as an object approaches the event horizon, time, relative to the rest of the universe, slows toward infinity. To the outside observer, an object becomes trapped at the event horizon (although it cannot be seen). What is hard to understand is that the object, in its own frame of reference, does cross the event horizon.Thorne does not succeed in fully explaining exactly what is happening in this strange region that is outside of our universe. For example, looking out of the hole, in the direction he is falling, does Cooper see all of time come to an end? How fast is he traveling? If he orbits just below the event horizon, is he traveling near the speed of light? Why, exactly, is it so important that Cooper intersect the out falling singularity? Simply stating that this is "historical light" is not an obvious explanation.I suspect that the problem is that many of the answers to these questions exist in mathematical equations, which are Thorne's old friends, since he has spent a lifetime with them.These complexities make the book both fascinating and difficult at the same time. Einstein once said that ideas should be as simple as possible, but no simpler. Thorne is dealing with complex material and has done a good job of trying to live up to Einstein's dictum.

The best thing about this movie, as far as I'm concerned, is that it was designed from the beginning to treat some of the most interesting effects of general relativity in an accurate manner, and to make these counterintuitive effects central to a compelling human story. That story may be unrealistic in many ways, as most interesting stories are, but everything that occurs in the movie is consistent with the laws of physics as far as we know them (the material at the end delves into very speculative issues, but it does so in ways that are inspired by serious work in quantum gravity).The fact that the main features of the movie are scientifically realistic could come as quite a surprise to many viewers, and this book gives them the opportunity to take the next steps toward understanding this surprising and incredibly beautiful science.

Kip Thorne's Science of Interstellar, answers just about all of the questions that one could possibly have after seeing the incredible movie. From the "simple" law of gravity, to the insanely complex ideas of space time warping, the tesseract, and gravitational anomalies, Kip takes his incredible knowledge of the universes and translates it into language that we can understand. The Science of Interstellar is as fascinating as it is riveting.The only complaint that I have is that Thorne does not dedicate a specific chapter or section to explain the complex timeline which occurs throughout Interstellar. There is a chapter on the climax of the movie where I believed that section would be, however, there was nothing on the crazy timeline of events which would have been quite helpful in the understanding of this incredible movie.

Very readable without mastering the intricate math that goes with this kind of science. A very good story, too, about how this all came to happen and how and where the film makers had to compromise the science for the sake of story telling and when they hewed to the science more closely. And you learn quite a bit of science in the course of the book. You get a pretty solid update on the status of relativism in the early 21st century. Thorne is an obvious and unapologetic Einstein fan, so you get an enthusiastic argument for his undeniable brilliance as the guy who unlocked all of this, assuming Thorne and others are smart enough to figure it out.

Nice book. Shows all the good spots and navigating while travelling to Nicaragua.The pages are very thick and sturdy and glossy with a lot of pictures. A lot of information, but not a lot of the information that I need.

Nice little booklet, good information. Not a lot of pictures and fairly vague price indications though. Although I have to admit that prices do change a lot, so this might actually reflect it better in the end.

Access code DID NOT provide access to the Premium WEB site, publisher charged me $40.00 plus tax to get access to the Premium WEB site, that I had to have to comp[lete an assignment. Amazon relly should fix this deceptive description. Also, the publishers' support is worthless, no number to call and takes days to answer emails.

If you are needing online access to MindTap assignments and activities, you will have to pay an additional fee to Cengage. The access code that comes with this book does not get you into MindTap. I just discovered that in class when I tried to login to do an assignment. I wish this had been clarified in the posting. I thought I was getting full access when I purchased this item.

If you need this textbook for a class and you also need the online materials, I suggest just buying your access directly from Cengage. The access code that comes with this book basically just the eBook, so if you needed MindTap, you'll need to pay an extra $40 + tax to upgrade your access. The description said this book came with the code. It did have a code but had already been used. Would not have bought this book of I would have known.

One of the most useful textbooks I have ever gotten. If you can afford to buy instead of rent I recommend doing so. This book teaches you how to write a resume, prepare for an interview, write a professional email and so much more. I wish I had bought this. Instead I ended up making copies of the pages I knew would be useful in the future. When my friend from another school felt underprepared for the job hunting process I let her make copies of some of the pages too and she said it was really useful during her interviewing process. Now she is an accountant with a starting salary of $60,000!I definitely never recommend buying books because who has the money for that, but some books are worth investing in and this is definitely one of those!

I got this book for my business class. There chapters are quick reads and most of it is common sense, but it was a good enough book with some helpful things to help in business. I enjoyed reading the difference between a memo and email and it had some helpful stuff here and there

Not a great book, but not horrible. I can't comment if the organization of the book would be good start to finish as our professor has us jump chapters. There are a lot of graphics, almost too many. I also find it confusing when graphics are referenced on completely different pages causing you to flip back and forth. It's horribly distracting.

I was not impressed with the condition of the book, but it was only a rental so I cannot complain too much. Both the cover and back were bent and curled. I did serve it's purpose though.
