Great read. If you dig Noah’s work in Commentary and everywhere else then you really should get this book. It’s really only intended for readers with an open mind, or those smarter than a hamster. Anyone offering a one star review is probably just offended that they couldn’t comprehend anything beyond the cover page.
If you are interested in the rising movement on America's left, I would commend this book to you as an excellent choice for learning about the social justice movement's tenants, goals, and problems.
First and foremost, if you’re on the fringe left or right, you will not like this book. If you’re somewhere in the middle of the political spectrum (like me), however, this might be a good choice. One thing to keep in mind is that, at least on Goodreads and Amazon, a lot of people that haven’t read this book are giving this book one-star star reviews, so the rating average is skewed more negatively than the book deserves. This book condemns identitarianism and racial reductionism on both the left and the right. It details the philosophical developments of these movements, the violent turn of the adherents, and gives recommendations on how to limit their influence. The last part is definitely what made this book worthwhile in my opinion - too often political books expound on what’s wrong with the world without hinting at a solution. The other part of this book that stood out to me was the authors level-headed critique of Trump and the alt-right. I think he was actually able to express his critique of the right more concisely than his critique of the left.Even though I liked parts of the book, it didn’t seem entirely cohesive, especially in the first few chapters. The book definitely improved towards the end though. Overall, due to the suggestions at the end and the most level-headed critique of the alt-right that I’ve ever read, I liked this book.
A confused, biased and unintelligible mixture of seemingly random words masquerading as an adjudication of contemporary social issues. Rothman shows no connection to what is real and tries desperately to push his personal bias on social issues as logical or true.
Great book, great guy. Love the commentary magazine podcast too
Noah is one of the best writers working today — mostly because he's one of the best thinkers. I've read him in Commentary and listened to him explain complex subjects on podcasts and on TV and I always come away having learned something new and thought about something I thought I knew a lot about in a totally different way.I knew it would be an "important book," but I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. His writing is incredibly energetic; some of his sentences are mini-essays. Everything he explores is all bad news, but you want to keep going because you get really invested and engaged in the telling of it. It was wonderful to get to "listen" to him at book length, and unsurprisingly I found his observations and recommendations compelling and persuasive. All in all, brilliant book.
Confirmation bias is seldom acknowledged but is exhibited here in affected, self-aggrandizing prose. Rothman presupposes that injustice has occurred in a singular vacuum without acknowledging the systemic historical context. Harrison Bergeron is a more compelling and insightful fiction than this pernicious privileged piffle. Rothman negates individual experience in deference to individual ideology. Is indifference to injustice an inspired ideology? I think not.
Cogent and consequential... for the open minded who value listening and perspective taking enough to let this in to (hopefully) advance the conversation toward a social justice we all can recognize. Perhaps best read in discussion groups.
