Review

NONNI'S MOON shows how a little creativity and inspiration can bridge the gap of loneliness and distance, and bring even far away loved ones closer. The relationship between mother and daughter, grandmother and granddaughter is sweetly depicted in this warm and comforting book. --Caralyn Buehner, author of Snowmen at NightNonni's Moon is a lovely story with a very sweet eye-catching cover. It will inspire family members living far apart to find creative ways to stay in each other's lives--just like Nonni and Beanie! --Carmela LaVigna Coyle, author of Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots?A fantastic message for children who are separated from loved ones! Empower your children to figure out a way to stay connected, just like Beanie in 'Nonni's Moon'. This beautifully illustrated story demonstrates how you can still be close at heart, even when you're far away in distance. - Laurie Wright, author of the Mindful Mantras series for kidsNonni's Moon by Julia Inserro is one of those feel good books for kids and parents alike. Lucy Smith's illustrations capture our hearts. Diversity is shared within the illustrations. The story line seems at first to be a bedtime story. But, there's much, much more. There are "hidden" connections with the world of science and social issues. This would be a great means to introduce time zones and the earth's movements to young children, as well as use in a discussion of where the moon is when it can't be seen. - Gail Kamer for Readers' FavoriteIt's on our reading list! - KidsShelf Books

Being a military family means we're not living near either set of my child's grandparents. And at times it means Daddy is also away and my little man is missing his loved ones. It's hard to explain to a 3-year-old (or even younger) why his favorite people are not around all the time, and it is even harder to help them through their big emotions (and tantrums they lead to).But teaching a child to bond with far-away relatives with the help of a sweet children's book is a great parenting tip.I received a complimentary electronic copy of this book to enjoy and share with you.Nooni's Moon is such a sweet book and a great way to show little ones that a loved one is always thinking about them, even across the distance. First of all, I love the concept of the moon, since my child LOVES the moon. The story has a child and grandmother across time zones, where one is waking up, the other is going to bed. So they came up with a sweet way to send a message of love to each other, through the moon. The illustrations are just lovely and the concept is beautiful. Allowing a small child to embrace a connection with far away relatives through a special game is very powerful and helps build the child's self-esteem and emotional regulation.I would love to get my hands on a print of this book to more easily read and enjoy with my son.

I realize this is an award winner, but I found the story far too simplistic to even keep my 7 year old interested--or my 3-year old. I also noted the not-so-subtle political correctness in it and am fully against dragging kids into the volatile agendas of one particular group of people. The pictures were nice, so there's that but that is where the message of the author is meant to intrude on a child's mind. If a children's story can't be presented just for the entertainment, educational or uplifting message; and if the author is so off-centered they can't refrain from imposing their own political bias, no matter how subtle the imposition, on even a mere child, it's not a book I will review highly or share with anybody. The book is now part of the landfill.

We live overseas with two young children far from family. They miss their grandparents and this book shows a sweet way to feel connected to loved ones far away. I love that the book is multicultural as the main character Beanie lives in what appears to be a desert Middle Eastern country while her grandmother lives across the world. Beanie's mother has light skin and hair while her father has dark skin and hair. Her siblings, teacher, and grandmother show a range of skin colors. The illustrations are very cute. Great for anyone who lives far from loved ones, whether in a different country or just another state.

This is such a beautiful story! My family has spent a lot of time traveling around the United States and around the world too. Being able to travel and live abroad is a wonderful experience, but it can be very hard, especially with kids, when you are far away from your loved ones. Even with modern technology, being apart is tough. We used to use the moon too, usually as a comfortable 'friend' when we went some place new "Look! The moon came with us!", but we'd also talk to it and ask if it was watching over Grandma, or our cats back home when we traveled. This is a sweet story about a family coping with separation with love and imagination.

This is a wonderfully touching story for children like my son, who lives across the world from his own grandmother. I think it would also help other children in different circumstances to understand new perspectives, as well as to find ways to feel connected when away from home themselves. The story itself is touching and uplifting, the illustrations are delightful, and I especially appreciated how the text is typeset to weave organically throughout the narrative. These little touches are what make cherished bedtime books.I cannot recommend this book highly enough and plan to buy a print copy as well once it's available!

A heartwarming story that is easy for any child, no matter their race or culture, to relate to. The moon is a constant we all share. This book is great not only for children who miss someone who is away, but also for inspiring dialogue about travel and relating with others.

Modern families are often separated by many miles, or in this case, continents and oceans. "Nonni's Moon" is about little Beanie who lives far from her grandmother and misses her terribly. Too little to understand it, she and her grandmother nonetheless come up with a solution to the delight of the entire family. Diverse, exotic, and at the same time very real, Inserro's "Nonni's Moon" will help sooth any child living far from a beloved family member and highlights the thrill of creative problem solving at a tender young age. Highly recommend!!

The dialogue is realistic. Love that no one tells Beanie not to feel how she does, but both mom and grandma help her figure out how to handle her feelings of loss. Sweet story
