Diagnosed with a debilitating disease called Friedreich's ataxia (FA) at age seventeen, Kyle Bryant set off across the country to raise awareness. Today, he is the founder and director of rideATAXIA—a fundraising program of the Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) which welcomes thousands of participants who raise 1 million dollars for research every year. Though we may have a completely different story, I think all of us can identify with the challenges that Kyle faces and the strength required to overcome them. When my children were diagnosed with Friedreichs Ataxia, the provider gave us no hope. The next couple months were a haze of depression and hopelessness. Then we saw Kyles movie, The Ataxian. Shortly after, we met Kyle. Through Kyle, his advocacy efforts, and his story, we found hope again.This book gives the reader a glimpse into the mind and experience of a person with FA. It has helped me to understand the world my 2 young children are navigating.Kyle is genuine and relatable. The story will encourage anyone, regardless of the challenges he or she faces. Great little book! My first graders loved this book! I have it on Kindle, and I must say that the formatting is great. It is a lovely addition to my classroom library, and it works great on Kindle for independent reading sessions.

Cute and simple explanation of rainbow for any kid under 7 years old and younger. It was such a fun read and perfect length for bedtime.

My grandson had become fascinated with rainbows in a Rainbow Brite book. We read it too many time so I looked for another book that had rainbows in it. This book is advanced and my grandson doesn’t understand everything but he loves talking about the rainbows and rain.

Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ, is written as if the author has no idea where he's taking the reader -- ideas and metaphors seem to come from left field with no reason given and no grounding in any previous concepts described in the book. It is an introduction to schizophrenia as the author bounces the reader around from one outlandish concept to another with no apparent purpose.My comment has nothing to do with Christianity or my personal belief. But I question the author's strangely reasoned ideas about Jesus and "Christ" (meaning the anointed one) as if they are two separate people drawn together as part of a mythology the author is attempting to construct.One would do well to ignore this book. It's a horrible waste of time.

I am a big fan of Philip Pullman's writing. He he easy to read, clear, concise, and just generally a very talented writer. Pullman maps out many of the popular biblical stories as having plausible non-miracle explanations to how they may have come about as Jesus and Christ move through their lives. His title however is confusing to me, "The Good Man Jesus and Scoundrel Christ". In this story it is Jesus who causes trouble as a youth, who denounces his parents, is cruel to his twin brother Christ, and appears to act cruelly to those who are not of the Jewish faith. It is Christ who is the obedient child, who spends his life defending his brother's actions and words, who shows kindness and reverence to others, who shows respect and love to their parents, and who in the end begs to be able to die in his brother's place. I do not understand from the story how Christ is a scoundrel. My only other confusion was in Pullman's use of the term "gentile" when refering to the Romans who were not Jewish. I always had equated the term with Christianity, which would not have existed prior to the Crucifiction. Upon further research have learned it often refers to any non-Jewish faith. If you can have an open mind about God and religion it is a great story and can also be a great tool as an accomanying text to any "Contemporary view of Christ" college course.

Pullman has pulled off (no pun intended) a small scale tour-de-force of mock parable style. It seems that few either on Amazon or in the press realize how thoroughly he has pondered the ins and outs of the Grand Inquisitor, (book 5, chapter 5) the 'poem' Ivan invents for the edification of his kid brother, Alyosha, in Dostoevsky's Karamazov. Pullman's slim volume doesn't miss a beat in recapturing the thesis of the Dostoevsky's Inquisitor as he assails a silent Christ with his superfluity now that the church has taken over 'his message.' This is made clear in Pullman's chapter recounting the Three Temptations, and brought back more earnestly much later with Jesus's questioning of an either deaf, inscrutable, or non-existent god right before he is handed over to the soldiers by his 'Judas' (who turns out to be his twin brother, Christ.) The inability of a pathetic humanity to take Christ's path without miracles, bread and violence is retooled here in a simple narrative form, jettisoning the difficulties many contemporary readers will find when they wrestle with the original Dostoevsky. Judas's (Christ's) role, (like the snake in the garden,) is recognized by a gifted writer for what it is; the facilitator in the narrative. Naturally, it is Judas who makes it possible for Christ to realize his destiny, ie. to die as a man so that he may live as a god. Judas is what makes 'it' go; and could easily be construed as God's instrument, if God is indeed an all-knowing deity. (Yahweh probably planted the snake in the Garden as well; again, without which the Bible would end on page two.) Pullman takes the sine-qua-non of 'Judas' and sews it directly into Jesus's very flesh, by inventing his doppelganger, his twin brother, Christ. He takes what heretofore can be understood as a metaphorical truth and makes it literal. The modern stance of Dostoevsky is given a neat post-modernist twist here, and serves up new food-for-thought from the original recipe. -- Geoffrey Dorfman

This rewrite of the story about the itinerant preacher who grew up in Nazareth and spoke of a supernatural kingdom that was never to come should be given to all children by age 12 to make them wonder about the unreal dictates and stories they had pushed on them since they were very young. Pullman does a great job of distinguishing the reality from the myth and proposing that the outcome was being arranged and manipulated from the very beginning. A good read!

Publication of this book caused a deal of controversy, with some offended readers labelling it as blasphemous. That such readers took offense is understandable. In Pullman's version, "Jesus" and "Christ" are brothers, and the former is manipulated into dying so that the latter can leave writings that can be used to establish a new religion. The plot stays close enough to the traditional biblical tales that it takes relatively small changes for the author to weave an entirely different (and secular) account.In understanding the author's intent, it is worth noting that this book was published as #14 a series on ancient myths. While interpretations may vary, I take the author's account as a way of capturing the dual nature of the historical Jesus as viewed from today's perspective -- not the man vs. the god, but the itinerant faith- healer vs the unwitting founder of a new religion. I found the book neither offensive nor particularly interesting, but am glad if it opens some reader's eyes to possibilities more likely than the supernatural myths of 2000 years ago.

Mildly amusing in some spots, but lacks the “punch” that I remember from classic Mad magazines of my youth.

Not worth it

Funny and clever the whole way through. No opponent of this regime should miss this book. MAD Magazine is tougher on Trump than the Democrats--and funnier. Not just about Trump, it also rips Rosie O'Donnell, Pope Francis, and some other celebrities. Well worth the price.

I guess one of the perks of winning a presidential election is that you get to be skewered by humor magazines like MAD. In this volume they give Trump the expected going over. There are enough Clinton shots that it's quite clear they could have turned their guns on Hillary had the election turned out differently.This book follows the tried and true MAD method. A lot of one page poster bits, (repositioning popular movies and such as Trump features). Lots of one page joke ideas, (for example, Trump quotes opposite quotes from the Bible). There aren't too many long form cartoons or parodies, which was fine by me because sometimes they can be pretty labored, (for example, a Zombie Apprentice line up featuring dead celebrities went on way too long). Peppered throughout are one page checklists of Trump v. Clinton, or Trump v. The Pope, and so on, comparing their stats like two opposing boxers. They were especially clever. Lots of rewritten songs, (Christmas carols and the like), that had some witty rhymes and jokes. There's a great deal of photoshopping, which of course is new to people who grew up on 60's and 70's MAD. For example, I got a kick out of how all of the Republican contenders were dressed and posed for a fake J. Crew catalogue.It's hard to keep this sort of thing up for an entire book, (hair jokes, Trump University jokes, and so on), but they do their best with the material at hand. There aren't any deep cuts or penetrating takedowns. This is Jay Leno/Jimmy Fallon territory and the humor is PG-13. But that said, there were a few chuckles and grins, and some of the individual bits were very clever.All in all this was exactly what I would expect from a MAD style book, and I'd suggest that how you feel about MAD and its approach to topical humor will probably dictate, (along with your degree of loyalty or opposition to Trump), how much you enjoy this book.(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. I grew up with MAD magazine; it fits my sense of humor well.I was thinking of purchasing the latest "serious" top-selling books about the current President, but since things are going from bad to worse in this administration, I wanted to lighten up my perspective. Ah, this just fit the bill !

MAD About Trump is quite funny if you're not a Trump follower. They should have gone deeper into some specific criticisms, such as Trump's legal problems, his attack on the environment, and so on, but there are several pieces in here that are especially witty. I plan to hang the fake diploma from the fake Trump University on my wall. Maybe one fourth of the book I found rather lame. But overall it was funny and I'm glad I bought it.

A few good hits but mostly just like a copy of Mad Magazine at a much bigger price.

We got the book to read, and made it most of the way through before our mastiff ate it. Up to that point, we enjoyed it. After that point, the dog did, too.

This is an extremely well written book that explains the dynamics of acupuncture and energy medicine in a way that is easily grasped. The material is original, thought-provoking and clearly extensively researched. The book is appropriate for acupuncturists, acupuncture students, energy/body workers, psychotherapists, massage therapists or anyone in the healing arts who wishes to gain a better understanding of mind/body medicine from both an Eastern and a Western perspective.

Haven't read it yet, just skimmed through. but I know it's a good one.

Dr. Mark Seem is a well known and respected Acupuncturist and founder of Tri-State Institute of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture in Stamford, Connecticut. The book presents theoretical foundations of the Acupuncture technique as practiced and taught by the author.I read Bodymind Energetics about a year ago as part of my medical acupuncture study. It is a good introductory text for someone interested in Acupuncture and Energetic Medicine.The book is accessible and well written; yes, as mentioned by the previous reviewer, it is repetitious at times, but I don't hold it against the author because the ideas advanced in the book are new for the majority of readers, and these concepts do require multiple different angles of presentations to make them clear.One of the reviewers complained about the angry tone of the book. There is some truth in this observation. One thing we need to remember, though, is that the author of the book has Ph.D. in French Philosophy. I am not making a disparaging remark. Au contraire. What I am saying is that the author is a very intelligent and sensitive person (otherwise he wouldn't achieve what he has achieved and wouldn't be doing what he is doing!), but, judging by his (very elegant otherwise) writing style, the author's intellectual roots are undoubtedly Gallic with all the applicable stereotypes (see Monty Python and the Holy Grail or read Mark Twain's ramblings on the subject).Just remember that there is plenty to learn from this book, and you will do much better paying attention to the content of the book, rather than tone with which it is written.The one weakness of the book, in my opinion, is its cover: the picture of black human figure surrounded by energy field lines is somewhat misleading. I suspect that this picture scared off a lot of intended readers. Don't pay any attention to the cover: the book has nothing to do with Blavatskaya/Astral Body/Distance Healing/etc.

This is a great instruction art book. I am learning so much regarding painting technique, color, and it is just plain fun to paint. I have done a few paintings already and have had friends excited about receiving them as gifts. The step-by-step instructions with pictures makes it easy to follow. It may not be as easy as Bob Ross makes it look on his program, but it is sure easier than I originally thought it would be. I would definitely recommend this and any other Bob Ross books you can get your hands on. I have four now and am having a great time.

I'm in the process of returning as pages 77-80 were damaged - not by Amazon, but were printed and cut on wrinkled and folded paper. The publisher should have caught it and never sent it out.As for content, I was hoping for more detail than Bob Ross gives in the show about loading your brush or certain strokes used. This book did not have anything more than the TV shows of the same painting. This is really nothing more than a transcript of the show. The step by step photos of the paintings are in color, which is nice, but again pausing the TV show would be the same output. Nicely put together, but it doesn't offer any new information.

As a life-long fan of old-time baseball who's read extensively about Babe Ruth's life and his impact on the game, I was expecting merely an enjoyable read when I picked up Jane Leavy's latest baseball biography. I had thoroughly enjoyed her earlier biographies of Sandy Koufax and Mickey Mantle and figured her take on the Babe would be equally lively and entertaining but wouldn't be able to offer much in the way of new information or analysis given the extensive volume of prior studies of Ruth's life and career. But I was pleasantly surprised to find there's a great deal in this book that is new, particularly the cultural analysis that Ms. Leavy weaves through the various stops along the 1927 postseason barnstorming tour that sets the stage for her story. She conveys the impact Ruth and his manager Christy Walsh had on popular culture, foreshadowing the celebrity-obsessed society that followed them. Equally interesting are Ms. Leavy's insights on Ruth's character, including his early life at St. Mary's and the bitter disappointment following his retirement as a player of being excluded from the game that truly meant everything to him. In addition, the interaction between Ruth and Walsh Ms. Leavy describes is fascinating, particularly Ruth's anti-authoritarian instincts and Walsh's management of them. Ms. Leavy has written a unique and insightful interpretation of Babe Ruth's life and career that anyone interested in baseball or the cultural history of the United States over the past hundred years will enjoy immensely.

I've thoroughly enjoyed Jane Leavy's previous baseball books but I found this book on Babe Ruth to be found wanting. It is not a traditional biography of Ruth from beginning to end but a mixture of episodes in The Babe's life certainly not in any chronological order. Simply put you are going to be told much more about Babe Ruth than you really care to know, much of it mundane.Much of the book deals with newspaper reports of well-known sportswriters from the Babe's time period which is okay with me. The period dealing with Ruth's illness was also well-done. I found myself reading about the first one-hundred pages and then started skimming the book from that point onward until I got to the part dealing with the end of his life.I bought four copies of the book, three of which I will give as gifts to friends. If I had to do it all over again I would buy only one and let it go at that. I'm sorry but I was disappointed with the book.I found one mistake at the very beginning of the Acknowledgments. Bobby Thomson hit his Shot Heard 'Round the World on October 3, 1951 and not on October 4 as the book states.

This book is a gem. The Babe is portrayed in the context of his era and his life is examined, if not explained, with a sensitivity to his early years. Well researched, it also debunks many of the myths that surrounded him. It is a great story and the fact that it is not a boring chronology makes it stand apart from the ordinary sports biography. It is organized around a barnstorming tour but relates back to Babe's beginnings and it holds together well. If you want to know what Babe Ruth did on the baseball field, you can read plenty of other books. If you want some insights into who Babe Ruth was and how he grew into an icon, you will want to read this one.

I just finished reading "The Big Fella: Babe Ruth and the World He Created" by Jane Leavy. On the surface, this is a book about the barnstorming tour Babe Ruth took with Lou Gehrig after the World Series in 1927. However, the author cleverly uses this as a framework upon which to tie in stories from his birth, youth, life in St. Mary's, introduction to professional baseball, drinking, womanizing, and of course, playing with kids and hitting home runs -- and some of the details of Babe's life have been badly distorted in the myths of pop culture over the years. This work is thoroughly researched (it took the author 8 years to research and write it), well organized, well documented, and very well written. As a lifelong baseball fan, I thought I had the basic Babe Ruth story straight in my head -- I was only partly right, and I learned a great deal reading this engrossing book. I would be remiss if I did not mention the appendices -- Ms. Leavy not only does the obvious and summarizes the Babe's baseball statistics, but she also goes much deeper into the story and summarizes the Babe's personal finances, and goes to show how much the Babe profited from Christy Walsh's management. She goes on to document all of her sources in detail -- hundreds of interviews with family, relatives, teammates, friends, etc. -- and explains how she was able to set the record straight (e.g. on Babe's birth and early years). Any aspiring young writer would do well to read these appendices in detail, because in them they will find the blueprint of how to properly research a subject thoroughly enough to be able to write on it knowledgeably. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

If you are looking for a conventional chronological biography you may be confused by this book. It is very much a biography but it is expressly nonchronological, designed around a three-week barnstorming tour following the 1927 World Series. It tells the day-by-day story of this trip, with wonderful period details, but it also weaves backward and forward, from turn-of-the-century hardscrabble Baltimore to 1920s New York and beyond. It explains why Ruth was a transformative ballplayer, but the focus is on how Ruth advanced and in many ways created the culture of celebrity, and why you can draw a straight line from Ruth to the cultural icons of today. It also introduces (at least to me) the character of Christy Walsh, the agent-cum-impresario who steered Ruth away from imminent disasters and helped mold the public persona. Leavy is a gifted writer, always open to the anecdote (and there are many great ones) but also focused on the heart of her story.So unlike most sports book this is not a snack, or even a dessert. It is a satisfying meal, one that will linger in the memory for a long time.
