This author has (had) the potential to really help adult children who grew up in an emotionally incestuous household. The beginning, when she provides an illustration of emotional incest, was really, really validating for me and helped me understand a lot of the complexities of my personality--things that seemed like positive traits in myself and my parent but that resulted in really yucky feelings. I am dismayed at the 1-star reviewers who view the behavior outlined in the book as normal--it is not normal or healthy. As someone who is desperately trying to break free of the very damaging dynamics between my mother and myself now that I am a parent, I took a lot of comfort from the author's assertion that emotional incest is not the child's fault, but that as adults we are empowered to break free and not repeat the cycle.Where I began to panic while reading the book is in the section about recovery. Love never addresses the fact that some adult children may really NEED to break off ties with an abusive parent. She does a great job of helping the reader understand that the parent probably was unaware of their harmful actions, but fails the reader by implying that children have a lifelong obligation to their parents, including seeing to it that their parents receive care when they are elderly. I think these are good general social rules to follow, but in the case of abusive parent-child relationships, the child should feel no obligation to allow the parent to remain a part of his or her life. People dealing with the aftereffects of emotional incest and realizing the damage it has done in their lives are in a vulnerable place, and it is very, very, very difficult to build the strength, courage, and self-affirmation necessary to break away from an abusive, emotionally over-involved parent (and Love implies that breaking away is absolutely necessary).For me, the suggestion that it's not OK to take space from the parent, temporarily or permanently, seemed like very poor advice. Love describes boundary setting and knowing limits and implies that by merely stating limits and boundaries the relationship can be healthy. Perhaps this simple solution works for some, but I'm guessing that many people who picked up this book have tried many, many times to set boundaries only to have them broken time and again and who continue to suffer emotional abuse and little separation from an invasive parent. For me, setting boundaries has not worked. I wish she would have given some advice in the exceptional situations where a parent will.not.let.go of his or her control over a child, where abuse may come into play, and where it may be necessary for an adult child to more completely separate and grant themselves the freedom from obligation to a parent, whether that means cutting the parent out of their life or not.So, I thought the book explained the syndrome very well and was very validating, but the author fails to see the process of healing through to the end by jumping to suggestions about managing the parent's behavior and insisting that a child remain obligated to the parent in question because it's not his or her fault that the emotional incest occurred. I get it--it's really taboo to cut a parent out of your life. But let's face it, some people grew up with a toxic-enough parent who continues to rule their life that it's the only way, if only temporarily. I felt she passed judgment in a subtle way on people who choose not to continue a relationship with a parent, which is sad because anyone dealing with this is probably already bogged down with a crushing guilt about even acknowledging a parent's serious faults.Good read, not to be taken on without a good therapist to work through this syndrome though.

I think they actually accidentally sent me two books. One looked like the cover as pictured, but the other was a hard back with a pink cover. Either way this is a good book. I can relate to a lot of what the author is saying in the beginning of the book.The only thing I did not like about the book was it talked about ways to "make amends" in the back. Yes, with some parents it is possible to form a new healthy relationship, but some people you just can't reach. I don't know if she mentions the no contact option in the back of the book but for some children they will end up having to cut ties completely with said person because not all people are capable of respecting your boundaries.

Wow. This book is extremely validating for anyone who grew up with an invasive parent. I didn't even know there was a name for what I went through growing up...and I didn't actually realize how much it affected me until I read this. The first half of the book was extremely helpful in describing emotional incest, health and unhealthy family dynamics. The second half of the book describes tools and methods to break free from emotional incest...I found some of these tools helpful, but others did not appeal to me.

I recognized many aspects of my own youth and early life in this book and came to a deeper understanding of the family dynamics that shaped my development into an adult. The title may be slightly misleading but the material is rational and understandable. It should help many people who sensed there was "something wrong" with their early life and been unable to get a grasp on it. With this, you probably can. Then you can start the process of forgiving yourself and those who caused you pain and distress which is a key step in healing.

Despite the ick-factor of the title, this is a life-changing book. My husband was loaned a copy after a discussion with a friend about a Psychology Today article on difficult mothers "Mother, Damned-est." After reading the book, his eyes were opened to how his childhood was damaging our marriage and it actually started him on a difficult journey of reframing his world. He asked me to read the book too. This book shed light on many issues in our marriage and helped me understand my husband in ways I hadn't before. We've recommended it to many people and have purchased a few copies for friends who have been blown away by this book. This book is not an excuse to blame your parents for problems in your life, but rather something to illuminate and explain issues and, hopefully, be a catalyst for personal and interpersonal growth. This book changed my husband's life and, thus, our marriage.

I've only been reading this for a little while, but it is speaking directly to me. It is not full of blame, shame, anger at people, which is a prison I have lived in before that I'm looking to get out of. It is practical, insightful, and spot-on. If you have a feeling this book could help you, don't hesitate to get it.

This book is well researched, cites its sources, and provides excellent therapeutic exercises. Despite the sort of "shock value" cover/title, this is really a solid self-help book and I highly recommend it. Good balance of anecdote and fact, well paced, not repetitive, doesn't talk down to you -- I couldn't put it down.

This is an amazing book that addresses a topic few people are willing to take a personal look at. I highly reccommend it for those adults who grew up being micro-mamanged by one or both parents.

The basic thesis of "Everybody Lies" is that online data on human behavior, including Google searches and data from Facebook, shopping and pornographic sites, can reveal much about what we really think than data from surveys in which people might be too embarrassed to tell the truth. In our unguarded moments, when we are alone and searching Google in the privacy of our homes, we are much more likely to divulge our innermost desires. The premise is that truly understanding human behavior by way of psychology or neuroscience is too complicated right now, so it's much better to simply bypass that kind of understanding and look at what the numbers are telling us in terms of what people's online behavior. In doing this the author looks at a remarkable variety of online sources and studies by leading researchers, and one must congratulate him for the diversity and depth of material he has plumbed.What has allowed us to access this pool of unguarded opinions and truckloads of data concerning human behavior is the Internet and the tools of "big" data. As the author puts it, this data is not just "big" but also "new", which means that the kind of data we can access is also quite different from what we are used to; in his words, we live in a world where every sneeze, cough, internet purchase, political opinion, and evening run can be considered "data". This makes it possible to test hypotheses that we could not have tested before. For instance, the author gives the example of testing Freud's Oedipus Complex through accessing pornographic data which indicates a measurable interest in incest. Generally speaking there is quite an emphasis on exploring human sexuality in the book, partly because sexuality is one of those aspects of our life that we wish to hide the most and are also pruriently interested in, and partly because investigating this data through Google searches and pornographic sites reveals some rather bizarre sexual preference that are also sometimes specific to one country or another. This is a somewhat fun use of data mining.Data exploration can both reveal the obvious as well as throw up unexpected observations. A more serious use of data tools concerns political opinions. Based on Google searches in particular states, the author shows how racism (as indicated by racist Google searches) was a primary indicator of which states voted for Obama in the 2008 election and Trump in the 2016 election. That's possibly an obvious conclusion, at least in retrospect. A more counterintuitive conclusion is that the racism divide does not seem to map neatly on the urban-rural divide or the North-South divide, but rather on the East-West divide; people seem to be searching much more for explicitly racist things in the East compared to the West. There is also an interesting survey of gay people in more and less tolerant states which concludes that you are as likely to find gay people in both parts of the country. Another interesting section of the book talked about how calls for peace by politicians after terrorist attacks actually lead to more rather than less xenophobic Google searches; this is accompanied by a section that hints at how the trends can be potentially reversed if different words are used in political speeches. There is also an interesting discussion of how the belief that newspaper political leanings drive customer political preferences gets it exactly backward; the data shows that customer political preferences shape what newspapers print, so effectively they are doing nothing different from any other customer-focused, profit making organization.The primary tool for doing all this data analysis is correlation or regression analysis, where you look at online searches and try to find correlations between certain terms and factors like geographic location, gender, ethnicity. One hopes that one has separated the most important correlated variable and has eliminated other potentially important ones.There are tons of other amusing and informative studies - sometimes the author's own but more often other people's - that reveal human desires and behavior across a wide swathe of fields, including politics, dating, sports, education, shopping and sexuality. There's plenty of potentially useful material in these studies. For instance, some of the data that indicates gaps in educational or social attainment in different parts of the country are immediately actionable in principle. Google searches have also been used to keep track of flu and other disease epidemics. Sometimes finding correlations is financially lucrative; there is a story about how a horse expert found that success in horse races seems to correlate with one factor more than any other: the size of the left ventricle. Another study isolated the impact of the early growing season on the quality of wines. There is no doubt that financial firms, supermarkets, newspapers, hospitals and online purveyors of everything from pornography to peanuts are going to keep a close eye on this data to maximize their reach and profits.Generally speaking I enjoyed "Everybody Lies"; for the scope of the material, the easy-going style and some of the counterintuitive observations it reveals. My main reservation about the book is that I think the author overstates his case and sometimes sounds a little too breathless about the great changes these tools are going to bring. More than once he uses the term "revolutionary" in describing these data tools, but I am much more suspicious of their ultimate utility. Firstly, data does not equal knowledge; rather, it is the raw material for knowledge. As the author himself acknowledges, understanding correlation is not the same as understanding causation, and it's in very few cases that a true causal relationship between people's Google searches and their true nature can be established. Part of the reason I think this way is because I don't believe that a person's Google search is as reflective of their innermost desires as the book seems to think, so what a person truly believes may go way beyond their online behavior. Consider the studies revealing people's sexual preferences for instance; how many of them point to trivial idiosyncrasies and how many are indicative of some deeper truth about human brains? The tools alone cannot draw this distinction. At the end of the day you could thus end up with a lot of data (including a lot of noise), but teasing apart the useful data points from the red herrings is a completely different matter. In this sense, looking at Google searches and other information can be a reductionist and simplistic approach.Secondly, it's usually quite hard to control for all possible variables that may reflect a Google search; for instance in concluding that racism contributes the most to a particular political behavior, it's very hard to tease out all other factors that also may do so, especially when you are talking about a heterogeneous collection of human beings. How can you know that you have corrected for every possible factor? Thirdly and finally, the "science" part of "data science" still lacks rigor in my opinion. For instance, a lot of the conclusions the book talks about are based on single studies which don't seem to be repeated. In some cases the sample sizes are large, but in other cases they are small. Plus, people's opinions can change over time, so it's important to pick the right time window in which to do the study. All this points to great responsibility on the part of data scientists to make sure that their results are rigorous and not too simplistic, before they are taken up by both politicians and the general public as blunt instruments to change social policies. This responsibility increases especially as these approaches become more widespread and cheaper to use, especially in the hands of non-specialists. When you are in possession of a hammer, everything starts looking like a nail.Considering all these caveats, I thus find tools like those described in this volume to be the starting points for understanding human behavior, rather than direct determinants of human behavior. The tools themselves can tell you what they can be used for, not necessarily what problems would benefit the most from their application. The many interesting studies in this book certainly answer the "what" quite well, but most of them are still quite far from answering the "how" and especially the "why". They point out the path to the door, but don't necessarily tell us which door to open. And they can be especially impoverished in illuminating what lies beyond; for that only a true understanding of the human mind will pave the way.

This could be the start of a joke: Economist walks into a room, full of people who have already worked in this field for years, disregards everyone and...Only it isn't a joke.The author of this book is an economist and a NY Times author. He describes the use of Internet data, especially aggregated Google searches, for social science. In this, the book is very good. That is, if you've never heard of the idea of using these data for research, this might be a book for you.However, people have worked for several years on these data, and have much deeper, more interesting insights than Seth SD. Indeed, he seems ignorant of their work, which is a pity, because it's so much better than the work he describes. For example, Google Flu was preceded by the work of Polgreen and (independently) Eysenbach. Tracking events from Internet searches was previously done by Backstrom (2008), etc. Indeed, there is an entire academic conference (WSDM) devoted to the use of internet data.It is as if a medical doctor would write a book about the effect of drug prices on consumption, ignoring all that's known in economics. Sure, it might be interesting, but it's probably going to contain a whole lot of errors and obvious stuff. The same happens in this book.Thus, there are better books about many of the subjects described in the book, including "A billion wicked thoughts", "Dataclysm", and the recent "Crowdsourced health".Additionally, and perhaps to make the book more readable, the author makes some mistakes which will be painful for anyone with an understanding of statistics. For example, the coefficients in regression don't show causality, only correlation.In summary, if you've never heard of this idea, by all means read the book, but with caution. Otherwise, better books exist.

I read it in two days. It is an easy and fun read even for the general reader.“Everybody Lies” is a fascinating dive into the world of “Big Data”. The core premise of the book is that by mining large data sets we can answer questions more accurately than through other methods. Behavioral and psychological questions can be addressed without the filter of a poll or questionnaire, where “everybody lies”. Thus, in theory, we capture a more accurate representation of people’s real prejudices and desires through big data searches than through polling.Seth Stephens-Davidowitz uses quirky and often humorous examples to show the power of big data. One example from the book revealed that I was one of the 7% who finished “Thinking, Fast and Slow” (I am not sure whether that is a good or bad thing).The data is the data, but the interpretation is subjective. My concern is that the subjective conclusions drawn from the data will be presented as fact rather than what they are – subjective interpretations of the data (however statistically significant). As such, there is a danger that such information will be misused. We still need to be cautious in determining the meaning of the data.Seth Stephens-Davidowitz brings the topic to life with terrific story telling about a wide number of subjects. The author has performed a great service by making this very important topic comprehensible to “the rest of us”.

Heard the author interviewed on the radio & thought the premise was awesome. I love social science studies like this and was eager to read it until I learned very quickly that the message was that Trump votes and racism were correlated and that's mainly why Trump won? Returned promptly.

Very poor, no scientific approach applied. If you want to see confirmation bias at work I would recommend this book, otherwise don't waste your money.

About the Author

This is a well written book that describes the nature of the culture wars ripping the American culture. Youseff describes the holistic nature of both Islam and atheistic secular humanism and their common goal of destroying any semblance of Christianity within America. While he presents the problem facing America well, I think his proposed solutions are somewhat weak in that he only addresses working personally with our Muslim neighbors to win them to Christ. There is a public policy angle that he did not address which is typical of most Christian leaders. While we need to love these people we also need to realize the truly devout are not our friends. They are here to destroy Christianity as well as Western civilization. The reality is that Islam was turned back numerous times through warfare. If Christians had not fought off previous attempts by Islam to completely take over Europe and the world we would all be Muslims today, or at least slaves under Islam. The book would have been stronger if the author addressed how Christians should deal with public policy addressing the spread of Islam and the threat it poses for our neighbor's welfare. Lack of biblical answers regarding the role of Christians in public policy issues is a weakness found in most Christian books dealing with the culture war. If the author would have addressed this badly needed area of Christian ethics, the book would have been much stronger and filled a badly needed vacuum in Christian practical knowledge. Still, it is a good introductory resource for Christians unfamiliar with these issues and I highly recommend people to buy copies for a Sunday school class and for their church leaders.

Enlightening. I didn't see the difference between Christianity and Islam. I always understood Islam to mean peace. I didn't truly know that some have and are taught a their hidden agenda. I loved the explanation of the correlation between old testament history and today's time and actions. I always knew history repeats itself, but I never thought of it in these terms. I would recommend this book to all Christians and Americans who are concerned for our country. We must put God first where he belongs and work toward living his truth.

This book brought attention to what's going on in this country that is so divided. Only prayers will return America again to the GOD who has blessed and protected this Country since its inception

Michael Youssef show is in this book just how we, as Christians, are to witness to our Muslim brothers. The radical Islamist are not seeking truth, but the truth of the gospel is what we must share. This is a book that needs to be read by all evangelicals.

My husband, who doesn't read books often, was very impressed with the content of the book. He said it was such a good overview of what is really happening in our world and told me it was a must read.

This book had me hooked from the introduction. I learned a lot about the Muslim religion and about myself. What a wonderful resource to reference again and again. I intend to read other selections by this author.

It's right on! The biggest problem is that people who are unaware of the cultural and spiritual dangers America faces are probably not going to readthe book.

Great book, Dr Youssef's writing is clear concise and up to date.

This covers a lot of the same ground as books such as "The Lights in the Tunnel" but in a more pop-academic style: the prose is all very accessible but the information is extensively footnoted and attributed, and there are numerous references to the work of other academics, mostly but not exclusively economists. For anyone who wonders why we're seeing record-high income inequality and jobless recoveries from recessions, this book will clear up a lot of mysteries.As someone in the technology field myself, I found little to disagree with in the book's treatment of recent and upcoming technological advances, which occupies the first several chapters; the authors have done their homework and have visited enough research labs and company R&D departments to have a very realistic picture of what's just over the horizon. There'll be nothing earth-shattering here for readers who follow technology trends or even who read WIRED magazine, but the book looks at all these things through a somewhat different lens (its impact on human work) than the tech press usually does, and I didn't find myself skimming even when they were covering developments with which I'm already very familiar.For me, the best stretch of the book was chapters 7 through 11, when the focus moves to the effects of recent technological advances on the economy and on the study of economics itself. The authors build a compelling case that income inequality is much more a consequence of the move to a digital economy than of any particular government policy. I found their take on globalization especially interesting: they view it as a big contributor to the rise in income of the world's top earners, but not for the reasons people usually think. I already tended toward this view, but now I'm further convinced that some of the changes we've seen in wealth distribution are primarily due to deep structural changes in the way the world works and won't be undone by tax policy.I found the book less convincing in its final chapters, where the authors suggest steps that can be taken to avert widespread unemployment and social disorder. Their short-term prescriptions are sensible enough (basically: take steps to encourage general economic growth) but, as the authors themselves point out, these won't address the underlying problem, identified by Keynes among others, of technological change outpacing the ability of large segments of the workforce to retrain for new jobs. They offer a few examples of systems that make it easier to find occasional part-time work and suggest that these could be expanded in the future, but as far as I can tell their vision would still leave people mostly idle. They are optimistic about the ability of people to continue finding work but I didn't feel it was justified by the picture their text painted.Still, this is about the best treatment I've found of the question of how technology is likely to affect work over the next couple decades. Highly recommended.

The result was factories and mass production, railways and mass transportation, and more. This led to life, as we know it.This remarkable achievement started to change everything. How we work, who works, where we live, how we live. How much we earn and how we earn, how many people live on the planet and where they live.This book, The Second Machine Age, shows how we are changing the world in ways more profound that what has taken place from the 18th century until now. Everything you do is changing. How you do it, ischanging. The implications are exciting, the possibilities are motivating, and some implications are nothing short of worrying.The thrust behind the “second machine age” is the computer, dubbed by Time Magazine in 1982, as the machine of the year. However, it was not the computer that did it, but what has been achieved after the computer. One hundred years ago, a computer was an employee’s job title, only much later replaced by a machine.What the steam engine and its like did for muscle power, the digital advances resulting from the computer are doing for mental power. This mental power will be no less important for humanity than the physical power of the steam engine.This book covers three broad conclusions regarding the implications of this mental power.The first conclusion is that computer hardware, software, and networks are building blocks for digital technologies that will be “as important and transformational to society and the economy as the steam engine.”Levy and Murnane, in their 2004 book, “The New Division of Labor,” identified the tasks that cannot be computerized and that will remain in the domain of human work. Into this category was driving, which has no fix pattern and so was best left to humans.In 2012, the authors drove in a Chauffeur, Google’s driverless car and part ofa fleet of cars that has travelled hundreds of thousands of miles without anyone driving. In all this time it has had only two accidents, one caused by a human-driven car that drove into a Chauffeur at a red traffic light, and one when a Chauffeur was driven by a person.This is only one example of many where a computer with sophisticated software outperformed a person. Similar, previously human tasks are performed by advanced internet communications technology. Into this category fits factory work previously the province of people.There still remains much work that has not been computerised, (let me not say cannot be!) such as the work of “entrepreneurs, CEOs, scientists, nurses, restaurant busboys, or many other types of workers.”“Self-driving cars went from being the stuff of science fiction to on-the-road reality in a few short years,” explains the authors, Brynjolfsson and McAfee.The second conclusion of digital technology is that its consequences will be profoundly beneficial.IBM and their partners, who include Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Cleveland Clinic, are building “Dr. Watson,” a computer with Artificial Intelligence that will assist doctors to make better diagnoses. A doctor would need read 160 hours every week simply keep up with the latest medical information relevant to his field. Dr. Watson can be fed all this information in a much shorter time and can help thousands of doctors in multiple geographies.The third conclusion of the book is of concern. While a Roomba (self-administered vacuum cleaner,) can clean a room, it cannot sort out the magazines on the coffee table. The role for housekeepers is secure.However, when work can be performed more efficiently and cheaper by robots than by people, there will be less need for some kinds of workers. Many jobs, even very high levels ones that rely on sophisticated thinking patterns will be able to be performed by computers with sophisticated software.The resulting era will require employees with special skills and the right education capable of using technology to create value. The corollary of this is that there has never been a worse time to have skills that are capable of being replaced by a computer.This particular cause of concern will probably be mitigated in the long term. The first machine age created child labour and the air pollution associated with the steam engine. Child labour no longer exists in the UK, and London air is cleaner now than at any time since the late 1500s.This fascinating book, filled with insight, examples and challenges, is essential reading for everyone.
