Diagnosed with a debilitating disease called Friedreich's ataxia (FA) at age seventeen, Kyle Bryant set off across the country to raise awareness. Today, he is the founder and director of rideATAXIA—a fundraising program of the Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) which welcomes thousands of participants who raise 1 million dollars for research every year. As the public face of FA and spokesperson for FARA, Kyle is in the vanguard of individuals who lend their passionate voices to the rare disease community. As he struggles to manage his own declining health and keep the FA research torch burning for a cure, his one-to-one grassroots efforts provide hope for recently diagnosed patients and those well into their journey, inspiring and coaching them toward the finish line. Kyle lives outside of Philadelphia, which is the base of operations for FARA, where he rides his beloved recumbent trike throughout the year.

Endurance cycling is not for the weak willed, and Kyle battles more than your ordinary cyclist having a debilitating neuromuscular disease. Though we may have a completely different story, I think all of us can identify with the challenges that Kyle faces and the strength required to overcome them. It's an inspiring story, filled with suspense & humor. It is truly life at its best.
When my children were diagnosed with Friedreichs Ataxia, the provider gave us no hope. The next couple months were a haze of depression and hopelessness. Then we saw Kyles movie, The Ataxian. Shortly after, we met Kyle. Through Kyle, his advocacy efforts, and his story, we found hope again.This book gives the reader a glimpse into the mind and experience of a person with FA. It has helped me to understand the world my 2 young children are navigating.Kyle is genuine and relatable. The story will encourage anyone, regardless of the challenges he or she faces. It will leave you motivated to do big things in your own life, believing you can.The book is both touching and entertaining; at times heartbreaking and yet filled with humor and hope.I recommend the book unreservedly.

As a person who has the same disease as the author, I read the book with interest. His descriptions of the emotions, the roller coaster ride you go on when you are diagnosed, the feelings you have once you decide to live your best life all validated that my journey has been normal and that I'm doing what other leaders in this disease community have done.
I cried and laughed whenever Kyle revealed his truths about living with a rare disease. This a brutally honest journey of his life so far - one where there are reasons that mere mortals may simply revert to isolation. Kyle however shows how changing the mind can create a life of power and action to support others and uplift an entire community.
Kyle's story touches our heart with his struggles and perseverance despite his devastating disease. What Kyle reminds us is always push beyond our horizon whether you have a disability or not. I truly enjoyed reading his chronicle of riding across the country to contemplate what matters most: love, determination, and a purpose regardless of your situation.
