Much has been said and written about the Morrigan, and I’m going to go out on a limb and say much more will be written about Her, much of it will be fantasy, and some will be academically dense. This book is a very short survey of what we know about the Morrigan in an easy, presentable way. It is aimed at the person who is not ready yet to read the more dense books or needs a compas to navigate the confusing material in books and websites. The book is made up of an Introduction and seven chapters. The Introduction starts by laying out the aim of the book and then goes into the different Morrigans, and their functions that the author will be talking about. It also discusses the different meanings that we have for the word Morrigan.Chapters 1-4 give you everything you need to know if someone asks you who are the Morrigans. Each of the first three chapters discuss Morrigu, Badb, and Macha and then the fourth chapter discusses the other Goddesses who MIGHT be conflated with them or are considered one of them. The authors in most cases gives you the historical material associated with each of the Goddesses, their relationships (mothers, fathers, husbands), the forms they take, their associations and realms of influence and then the author gives us a poem, or an invocation or an offering prayer at the end of each chapter.Chapter 5 gives us a glimpse of The Morrigan in mythology. In chapter 6 the author talks about The Morrigan and animals, and in chapter 7 the author talks about The Morrigan in the modern world and how to find Her.As an introductory text this book is an awesome start. There is no way you can fit all the contradictions that are The Morrigans in one text, but this book does a good job of it. I especially loved the poems, invocations, offerings and prayers and of course the bits of the author’s life that she chose to share with us.I think that if you are interested in The Morrigan, then this book is a must on your shelf. It is well researched, well written and engaging to the last word.

Before beginning, I'd like to note that I am an English professor and am therefore writing from the perspective of a scholar and fellow author.I ordered this book because the Pagan Portals series works as an introduction to topics one knows nothing about. Before the book, I knew nothing about The Morrigan except that she [they] is the Celtic goddess of death. I'd read two paragraphs about her [them] on Thought.co. I also knew nothing about the Celtic deities except a few names like The Dagda and Brigid, the latter of which I knew the basic facts about. With this mind, I will now first discuss the problems I found. Because of my utter lack of knowledge, I had a small bit of difficulty with PP: The Morrigan. Diamler assumes that one can recognize the names of basic Irish epics and that one already knows who the Tuatha de Danann are. I knew neither and had to google the latter so I could keep up. (To be fair, Daimler finally explains the Tuatha de Danann later in the book--roughly page 75 or so--so the issue is placement rather than a lack of explanation.)I would urge Ms. Daimler to confront Moon Books about the quality of their editors. A good editor would have caught that problem and had Daimler move the information. A good editor would have also caught the few typos and grammar mistakes in the book and fixed them. Since then, I've read 2 more Pagan Portal books by Daimler and noticed these same issues. Editors are paid to help catch these things. Moon Books needs to upgrade theirs, it would seem. Now on to the good parts. PP: The Morrigan succeeded in giving me an introduction to The Morrigan. I learned about the 3-6 goddesses who are included or excluded by various people as carrying the collective title The Morrigan. Daimler defines names, provides folktales, and explains the cultural context of ancient Ireland. The Morrigan/Anand, Macha, and Badb each get full chapters. Sample prayers are provided, offerings are discussed, and Daimler also discusses what The Morrigan is associated with (e.g., crows, horses, and wolves). One learns what holidays are associated with The Morrigan. Most of all, I respect Daimler for being upfront about when the source material contradicts itself. The Morrigan's origins are obscured by the fact the Celts didn't write down their history or myths. Also, some of the folklore tells different or even opposing stories. Daimler is clear about when the sources disagree or are confusing, and she encourages the reader to make up his/her own mind about what it means. This level of transparency and encouragement of self-agency is excellent in any such book. I wish more authors would be this upfront. As other reviewers have noted, Daimler tells short personal stories. Some readers don't like them; some do. I enjoyed them just because it gave me insight into how one worshiper experiences these goddesses. The book includes a bibliography for further reading, which is another good touch.Overall, I enjoyed reading this book--the level and type of prose made it an easy read--and felt that I received my promised introduction to The Morrigan. I know enough to know I'll read more books on The Morrigan. For this reason, I do recommend this book to beginners. Please note, however, that I truly knew nothing about The Morrigan prior to reading and therefore cannot tell if there any errors of fact in the book. Daimler clearly loves The Morrigan, though, and especially Macha. I would be surprised if I learned later that there were major, glaring errors of fact. Daimler seems too dedicated to her research to generate something terribly wrong.

After finishing Fairy Witchcraft by Morgan Daimler the thing that impressed me the most is here is a person who actually believes in the fairy race, and has a working relationship with them. The personal experiences she describes ring true, and her advice and practical suggestions for starting your own practice will be helpful for those sincerely trying to develop their own relationship with the Sidhe. There is also advice for contacting and developing an ally with your local fairy beings along with the more famous ones of myths and legends. I was especially pleased to see that she included the importance of working with your Ancestors and the Gods of your personal pantheon that are associated with the fairies. Sixteen key points listed in Chapter 1 as basics on how to interact with fairies will be especially helpful for those who are new to this subject. The book is well researched, and reading over the bibliography reminded me of all the books I have searched through over the years to find the information she has organized and presented to the reader. Don't let the short length of this book fool you, it is packed with information from many valuable sources.

Note for Kindle owners: the book has several great graphical representations that do not show well in the Kindle version. On my Kindle DX they were illegible. I had to buy a used hard copy to be able to read them.Let me start off simple: I genuinely enjoyed reading The Change Monster. Ok, now that we have that out there, please allow me to explain. Jeanie's book is vastly different from the other books on change management I have read so far. The Change Monster is not a how-to, step-by-step manual on how to slam home a win for any company undergoing change. It's more of a memoir of the good, bad, and ugly side of change she faced while living as a change consultant for the Boston Consulting Group (BCG).Thankfully, it's a much more than a memoir. The second half of the title tells you exactly what it is about: the human forces that fuel or foil corporate transformation and change. It's about the people side of change, not the Gantt Chart side of change management. If what you seek is a flow chart, put the book down and look elsewhere. In The Change Monster, the author shares her five-step process flow with us as both a foundation and roadmap for her methodology. She calls it "The Change Curve" which, coincidentally, is the outline for the book. The phases are: Stagnation, Preparation, Implementation, Determination, and finally Fruition. Anyone who has participated in a major transformation will easily understand and appreciate her terms. Each phase is clearly described, with multiple examples of people (remember, it's about the people) in companies struggling well, and not so well, move forward, stall, go backwards, survive, or quit altogether and revert to their old systems.I perceived no arrogance on the part of the author and found her to be humble in her storytelling - she shares much about her failures and missteps. I have never met Jeanie Duck, but after reading her book I imagine she's a great person, someone I'd certainly like to know. She seems very personable, professional, and interesting. Not sure if my perception is accurate, but that's how she comes across in the book.In addition, at no point did I perceive this to be plug for BCG services. In fact, throughout the book I thought she was extremely generous in her ideas, strategies, and tips for how to work with people through the change process. She gives a lot of insight away that anyone could test in their business; the book is jam-packed with great lessons she learned over the years.Regarding change, some make it. Most do not. The consensus is that ERP/CRM change initiatives have a 70-80% failure rate. Even when you hire a BCG, McKinsey, IBM, etc. Insane, right? And yet we still trudge forward in our need to stay ahead (or catch up) to our competition. So if we know we must constantly move forward AND we know that our chances of success are really low, isn't the best strategy to learn from others mistakes and not make the same ones? That's wisdom. This book has a lot of it. Read The Change Monster if you want a higher chance of success in your initiative. Couple it with other great resources, including Jeff Hiatt's book ADKAR (they map well together), and you will have a strong understanding about the people side of change. Highly recommended!

Jeanie's dissected testimonials provide a straightforward game board map that can be easily identified in one's own enviornment. Her nuggets of practical advice are useful tools to anticipate and prepare strategies for guiding our teams through the change monster's turbulent waters.

This book is great! It is easy to read and understand. It really helps you with the changes you might need to make in your organization and figure out why people act the way they do. This will prepare you for these reactions and how to handle them.

First, this book lists all the author's successes in great detail, but wants to only provide wooly and rather meaningless references to her failures or those clients who are hopeless. Where is the point in that - how can we learn from faults and her insights on poor strategies that we cannot cross reference to our own experience of these firms.Second, the first 40 or so pages are good - stagnation area is very good - but the rest is her successes without much value being added to the reader looking for wisdom.

Practical model for planning and leading change. Effectively addresses factors often overlooked in change until resistance is overtaking successful implementation.

the book came in a timely manner. i have not had time to read any of it yet but will get to it on my next day off.

Many organizations change. Most try and plan it. Many fail. Many mergers and acquisitions fail to deliver as expected. Why?Author Jeanie Daniel Duck cites the human element-how changing the corporate environment makes people feel. The author presents a five-stage framework for dealing with change called the "change curve." This change curve is designed for understanding and managing the human element of the change process. The five-stage process is as follows:· Stage 1: Stagnation. This is the time that the organization can be depressed or demoralized. There is a general slowness, difficulty in making decisions, and a general lack of motivation.· Stage 2: Preparation. Leaders of the change must accomplish the aligning and energizing of management around the corporate strategy and vision; articulating and detailing the plan; and generating a healthy dissatisfaction with the ways things are allowing for a genuine appreciation for change to come from within the workforce· Stage 3: Implementation. Here the leader's ability to manage the expectations, experience and energy of the company is critical to the success of the implementation. The author recommends four methods to start this phase: test and deploy, build behavior first, use attraction to convert, and plan replication.· Stage 4: Determination. This phase, marked with conflicts, clashes, failures, and minor successes, is only as successful as the degree to which top management stays involved and focused.· Stage 5: Fruition. This stage is when the change is in place. This is a time to reward employees for their hard work. The company needs to move forward to avoid re-entering a period of stagnation.

Author seems to use secondary sources for her book: newspaper articles and other authors; work. She divides the book into periods but many of them overlap so the reader never gets a real understanding of what Bechtel was doing when. The author has an agenda in coloring Bechtel in the most unfavorable light: this corporate behemoth was bad because it was big. Little credit is given for the corporation's undertaking during the period of the Cold War when the US as a whole and in a bipartisan way was fighting Communism and when the CIA's actions were necessary. The most interesting part of the book and less biased part is the description of the corporation's early history and the founder's early endeavors.

I'll start by first saying that the book itself is enjoyable as Bechtel does keep a very low profile and is clearly a major player in this country's history at least as it pertains to construction.Where I have to slap the author down is in her many implications she makes whereby the tail is wagging the dog. Iraq War.... because Bechtel wanted rebuilding contracts. Tolerating Saddam in the 80s... because Bechtel wanted to build a pipeline. The list goes on, but long story short the author goes to great lengths to imply Bechtel is some sort of Machiavellian puppet master behind the scenes without flat out saying it. It's lying without lying and implying conclusions on an extremely thin basis. The author would've had a great book just telling the story of Bechtel. Her many implications of malevolent profiteering at the expense of the country rather than just a company selling its country the goods and services policy makers at the time wanted smack of yellow journalism.

While heavily researched, the author had a very clear anti-Bechtel bias, and focused on the items that reinforced that, and minimized other issues. The hyperbole style detracts from the message.

Not easy writing a book about a behemoth corporation that is family controlled and a closed book culture. If you think you know Bechtel, you don't. Ms Denton has an octopus far bigger than anyone imagines and she does a good job of getting her journalistic arms around this vast story. Anyone interested in the intertwining relationship between corporate America and government (on all levels state as well as federal) will find rich reading. "I never realized"...." I didn't know that" are frequent reactions even if you thought you knew.

if your into building in America, and rest of world. This company built many important structures, roads, dams, etc, etc.all over the world and USA.a must read

Very good book.........you learn much about american politic.

An in depth exposition of how business and government have colluded to exploit other countries. Denton does a particularly good job connecting the dots between Bechtel and the deep state.

This is a truly fascinating story about how a company with a household name in the construction industry has survived almost a century with family members running it while amassing billions for doing things that the political elites in both parties wanted done around the world.

Innumerable Insects: The Story of the Most Diverse and Myriad Animals on Earth (Natural Histories)

Review

“Engel, a University of Kansas biology professor, delves into the American Museum of Natural History’s rare book collection, specifically its ‘thousands of marvelously illustrated books’ about insects, to create a book as aesthetically pleasing as it is informative. Insects, Engel explains, are indeed innumerable, with perhaps as many as 30 million extant species. They can also be set apart from the rest of the planet’s life in many respects, since ‘insects were among the earliest animals to transition to land, the first to fly, the first to sing, the first to disguise themselves with camouflage, the first to evolve societies, the first to develop agriculture, and the first to use an abstract language.’ Engel covers insect diversity, evolution, ecology, and physiology, among other topics, while including intriguing vignettes about early entomologists, including Maria Sibylla Merian, Julius T.C. Ratzeburg, and Jan Swammerdam. With so much ground to cover, Engel doesn’t go into great detail about any one point, but there’s enough substance to satisfy most readers. The images, however, are the stars of this work, which will delight every entomophile who turns its pages.” — Publishers Weekly

First, I gave this book Five Stars because the book is beautiful and should receive that rating. What is too bad is how it was simply put in a "larger than the book"box with absolutely NO packing material. That means that this heavy, hardback book bounced all over in shipment resulting in corners that were damaged and "dinged." It's really amazing the book isn't damaged more than it is. I guess the thinking is that a heavy book isn't breakable, but it is still easily damaged so just a bit of something to cusion and keep the book stable would have been helpful. ☹

If you love nature and have books filled with beautiful photos, like me, here's something unique: a gorgeous volume illustrated with 300 years of lithographs, etchings and paintings of the most diverse organisms in the history of life, the insects. It's printed on a heavy, very smooth matte paper, and reproduces the original plates in exquisite detail and gorgeous colors. The plates are from rare volumes, depicting idealized versions of an absolute riot of insects. My favorites are from an 1804 volume by Julius Ratzeburg on forest insects; each of his plates shows the sequence of life stages of an insect munching away on its host plant, along with its anatomical details, unlike any photograph could ever portray. Even the plates of lice are beautiful. Chapters are based on major themes like flight, metamorphosis, and sociality, and the writing is very engaging. I particularly like the vignettes of early entomologists. There is of course Maria Sibylla Merian, who spent 1699-1701 in the forests of Suriname painting her observations of insect life histories. And one Charles Butler, minister, early apiculturist, and author of the 1609 The Feminine Monarchie, who wrote a madrigal based on the sounds from his hives. Ulisse Aldrovandi's 1602 book was the earliest insect text, which presented a surprisingly accurate evolutionary tree of insects. Aldrovandi was also the Pope's advisor on dragons and considered himself another Aristotle. This is stuff that could only have been authored by Michael Engel, perhaps the most knowledgeable entomologist in the world and a true polyhistor. The volume is very high quality, remarkably affordable, and totally delightful.

If you are interested in the evolution of insects, this is the best volume out there for the lay reader. Engel is a world-famous scientist in the field. He also knows how to write with insight for the lay reader -- an uncommon trait for those in his field. Terrific illustrations. Excellent gift book for the holidays.

This is a beautiful book, I highly recommend it.
