I lived in Wisconsin for 3 years and completely fell in love with the culture and food. My husband is from Wisconsin and knew most of the Supper Clubs in the book. He said this book brought back great memories for him and he really enjoyed looking at the pictures and recipes and reading the book! We will be making many of the recipes out of this book, especially as it gets cooler!

Well, hard to say that this is the 'best' book to begin with since this was my first. But I can assure you the it is a GREAT place to begin since it feels like an "Information Desk" where you can find where more information about a particular topic is. So if you are into Robotics or into Machine Learning or into ANN or GA, Cyborgs, or you just like AI but not sure what/who/where to begin? then this book will point you in the right direction. THE WALKING DEAD Vol. 17: Something to Fear (issues 97-102 of the monthly series) and all I have to say is WHAT!?!?!!?I know main characters come and go in this book and weâ€™ve seen the deaths of some beloved characters, and while I was shocked at the first death of a minor/major character, the second death of a MAJOR character in this book floored me.How could he?Sigh.So Rick and company have met up with the folks at the Hilltop community and have worked out a trade agreement. The Hilltop supplies Alexandria with food to get them through the winter and in return Rick and the rest of the Alexandrians will protect the Hilltop from Negan and the Saviors, a band of survivors whoâ€™ve come together and are strong-arming the other neighboring communities by offering â€œprotectionâ€ (from the Saviors) in return for half of everything.But when Neganâ€™s goons stop Rick and Co. on the road back home and make the same threat, Rick and Co. donâ€™t bow down so quickly. They do allow one of Neganâ€™s men to escape, though, and relay the message: â€œIâ€™m told Negan is running some kind of protection racket. Well, clearly--we donâ€™t need any protection. Effective immediately weâ€™re taking over the protection of the Hilltop. You get NOTHING. Understand? Pass that along to Negan. Also, while youâ€™re at it, weâ€™ll offer you the same deal you offered the Hilltop. But, yeah, as good as the book has been lately, as tough as Rick has been, as cohesive as the group as a whole has been, I just want to keep reading.However, if the TV show plays out anything like what happened in this volume, Iâ€™m going to be one very unhappy viewer!Charlie Adlard is also making great strides here, expressing a ton of information with a simple gesture or facial expression. The confrontation with Negan and his men on the road to the Hilltop is one of the best 22-page spreads Iâ€™ve seen, probably ever.If you havenâ€™t been reading THE WALKING DEAD, youâ€™re only doing yourself a disservice, not because the book will change your life or anything, but because you canâ€™t work yourself up to these last few volumes, and they are simply outstanding lately. I've purchased all volumes up to 22 and the TV show has just about caught up to wear I am in the novels. These books are friggen awesome. I don't read much and my buddy lent me VOL 1 after he knew I liked the show. Well, I burned through the first one and then just went on a tear buying 4 volumes at a time...the price is pretty good for what you get out of these. $9-$15 is the range I've paid per novel, I'm not sure why they aren't the same but anyways, I keep buying them none the less. The story was written before the TV Show and the show follows the story but there is some differences. The written story is more violent and graphic then the tv show but the tv show does a decent job of sticking with main ideas. I've noticed that certain plot things that happen in the book also happen in the show but there is a unique twist like a different character it happens to or something like that. Which makes reading these volumes great cuz I have some idea of where the story is going (after having watched all tv episodes) but there are still surprises. If you like the TV show and haven't read these, give it a try and you will get a whole new experience of the Walking Dead story. I'm putting this same review under every volume I've purchased (1-22) so people can see it. go buy these!

Collecting: The Walking Dead #97-102Rick's survivors and some allies find themselves up against a force worse than zombies, worse even than the Governor: Negan and what appears to be an army of people bent on exacting tribute from other survivors. The Darwinian logic that has whittled down the cast in this series has increased the pressure to survive or get of the way.If you're new to the series, this novel will be tour-de-force of post-apocalyptic tension. Relationships are fleeting and death is around every corner. There are only a handful of main characters to keep track of, so I believe it will be very accessible. That said, The Walking Dead feels past its prime. If you have followed the series for some time, there is very little new tension here. Hope is offered to readers one more time at the end of the novel. I find myself pulling for Rick (still), but I also feel that the series is very much in danger of falling into a trap where it becomes a new way to sadistically torture increasingly stereotypical characters.For this reader, I am still emotionally invested in the series. I held on tight between pages as the action unfolded, and I am counting down days until the next graphic novel comes out (see The Walking Dead, Vol. 18 ) so it was a great value and a great deal of fun to read. But I am beginning to become concerned because I feel a trajectory of hope and punishment becoming established without any direction for the plot.

As other reviews note, this installment delivers. At times, it seemed like Kirkman himself was speaking via Negan's character to some fans' complaints about the series going stale/rehashing old territory. To the contrary, this sets a new, more viscious tone for the series; the ending, once again, left me wanting more (dern you Kirkman, lol). What happened in this volume -- no spoilers, you'll need to read it -- created lots of space for character development and conflict. The fact that Kirkman and Adlard still deliver exciting stories after 100 issues is nothing sort of amazing. Their work on the Walking Dead is the best long-term run/on-going comic book collaboration ever (even better than Lee-Kirby's seminal run on FF). Definitely start at the beginning with the hardcovers or Omnibus editions if you've just found the comic due to the TV series. Highly recommended, but not for the faint of heart.

I was reading along and enjoying this book, it was headed for a five star rating. But, I have now read the end of the book three times and still don't know who did it. Lucky it got as high as three stars.

Even if you're not really an Agatha Christie fan, you should read this one. Christie is criticized as a literary light-weight. It's true that her characters are formulaic, but she wasn't really interested in characters. Her specialty was intricate, multi-layered puzzles and no one did them better. This book and AND THEN THERE WERE NONE are her trickiest and she spoke of both as her most difficult to "pull off" effectively.I can't say much about the plot without giving away the secret, but it's easy to see why this book caused such a stir and why it continues to be so controversial among fans of classic British mysteries. Some of Christie's colleagues at the Detection Club accused her of cheating, but she stoutly maintained that all the clues were there. I think she's right and the book is even more fun to read the second time to see what you missed on the first reading.In addition to the tricky plot, the book is of historical interest in other ways. It introduces a character that Christie DID care about. The narrator, Dr. Sheppard, has a nosy, bossy older sister who plays a pivotal role in the story. The author claimed that Carolyn Sheppard was based on her own grandmother and great-aunt, both important figures in her childhood. They were women who appeared to be sheltered and ignorant and yet they were shrewd judges of character and (through gossip and their servants) they knew everything that was going on around them. A few years later, this character would emerge as Miss Jane Marple and the books and stories that feature her are my favorites.This book also appeared at a pivotal point in Christie's life. Her first book (THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES) was published almost by accident and led to the novice author signing a publishing contract which netted her very little money. She lived up to her obligations, but switched publishers as quickly as possible and made damned sure to be well-represented in the negotiations with her new publishing house. Mrs. Christie may have been shy and unassuming, but she knew her own worth and she wanted to profit from her successful books. "Money, it means much to me and always has done" says Hercule Poirot and the character speaks from the author's heart.This was her first book with her new publisher and (partly because it was more effectively marketed than her earlier ones) was her most successful to that date. It was also the last book she wrote before her beloved mother died, her first marriage fell apart, and she became a public figure in a most unpleasant way. She would never again be the confident, trusting young woman who wrote this book, but she learned from her mistakes and (eventually) went on to even greater success and personal happiness. Good for her.

THIS REVIEW IS SPECIFIC TO THIS VERSION. The book I received was not the book that I thought it would be. First, the cover itself looks like it was made on a personal computer, the picture is stretched so its blurry, the main character has a hole in his head which you can tell is not suppose to be there and the authors name which is originally printed at the top is cut off. Perhaps the worst part is the back cover switches between telling two different plot lines, like wtf? The inside is printed like a school book with the print being extra large and all spaced out. I don't wanna read it because I'm picky about my books and I wouldn't be surprised if there were errors throughout the whole book. What a disappointment!!

The release of a new film based on Agathe Christie's much lauded mystery was what drove me to read the novel. I recommend the book without reservation. This paperback edition has nice sized type and spacious line spacing. It is also the previously mass-marketed version; on bookshelves now is the current reprint with the cast of the Branagh film on the cover. The story is a quick yet engrossing read. Spoil alert: do yourself a favor and read the novel before seeing any of the filmed versions. Knowing what happens from seeing the film quite diminishes the fun of figuring out the who-done-it along with Poirot. N.B. Of the three films based on Christie's novel (the most recent directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh; the 1974 version starring Albert Finney; and a made for TV production from 2001 with Alfred Molina as Poirot [which I have not seen]), I think the award goes to the Finney. Both Branagh and Finney's films are very good, but Branagh makes some small changes that really didn't make any sense. Besides being more faithful to the book, Finney's performance of the revelation of the murder is more powerful. Still, the greatest pleasure is reading the book.

This is the worst publication I have ever seen. The book looks like a bootleg type copy. There is no copyright in the book. The text is broken in really odd places. I am surprised Amazon would even sell this.

Agatha Christie at her best! I am an avid Marple & Poirot fan, but I had never gotten around to reading this particular Christie novel. There's a lot of hype around this novel and some say its the best, and I can't find a reason to argue that. Reads very nicely and the ending had me pop up out of bed. I think I paced around my bedroom reading the last few pages.If you like Christie or are a fan of mystery, you must get this book. I especially like this particular publisher because of the good quality, attention to detail in editing, and that they organize the stories by Poirot, Marple, etc. in the top left corner.

Whether or not you agree with the thesis of this elegant little book, youâ€™ve got to love some of the imagery: a tame chipmunk named Little One, a Grand Canyon sunrise in our minds, the opposite musicalities of Barkerâ€™s parents, and more conceptually, his notion (derived from physics) of a â€œsum over future histories, resolving into the now.â€ The whole structure of the book is built around a lovely paradigm, the idea that apparently conflicting judgments can be true along differing dimensions.The book is well worth reading for qualities like these, and for its quiet precision of language and analogy. Its appeal is poetic rather than polemical though, and after reading I found myself disagreeing as profoundly as ever with its core assumption.That assumption is expressed several times in the book, but without much support, as if it were a settled matter of science rather than a leap of faith. For instance in the sentence: â€œYour actions are all predetermined by unconscious natural causes before you are aware of them.â€ While reading, I kept expecting Barker to backpedal and start replacing the word â€œpredeterminedâ€ in statements like this with something less absolutist like â€œconstrained.â€ But the line of thought never budges from strict, dogmatic determinism, the belief that there is an unbroken chain of inevitability tracing through all events.And yet that whole wild extrapolation of strict causality is, first of all, so counterintuitive. As a jazz musician and an author, can he really believe that each note or word heâ€™s ever been inspired to reach for was written already, eons before anyoneâ€™s birth, in some minor imbalance of the pre-atomic plasma?Forgive me, but isnâ€™t this just reconfiguring the traditional omnipotence and omniscience of god into an equally mystical scientism? Of course causality exists, David Hume notwithstanding; and we observe it in particular in certain mechanical relationships that are readily induced and measured. But there is no reason to postulate the total absence of any relationships other than strict causality among events, such as might be represented in consciousness. Certainly our experience of life tell us that we are at least somewhat free, and why should we assume that such a fundamental level of experience must be illusory?It seems so much more plausible that nature and the sequence of causality create parameters for us, capacities of various kinds, instincts, predilections, etc, which yes of course are rather deterministic at the population level - but that at the same time sentience is able to carve a degree of genuine individual freedom within this flow of events. The analogy would be life itself, and its ability to carve a niche of evolutionary order as a kind of back-current in the flow of entropy.There is of course no syllogism to prove that free will exists. The determinist can answer any seemingly free action by insisting it was foreordained. You can even argue, seemingly irrefutably, that determinists are inconsistent in their own lives, because they make efforts of various kinds (writing books, raising children, resisting enemies, etc), while allegedly considering all effort to be futile. But of course the answer even to this is, I do so only because I have no ability to do otherwise.Perhaps the most marvelous feature of Dan Barkerâ€™s charming book comes roughly halfway through. Namely, while he was typing one day out on his back patio, Little One (the chipmunk) hopped onto his keyboard and made a random hyphen. Barker left the hyphen in. He would have us believe that neither he nor the chipmunk had a choice in the matter.

What a gem of a little book this is! Beautifully written with stories, analogies, and models that uniquely resolve the paradox of free will in a deterministic universe. This book is a joy to read because of Dan Barker's new way of looking at the free will debate. The author deftly incorporates his musical background to aid our understanding in a satisfying way. Just as melody and harmony create beautiful music so does society give meaning to our individual lives. The end result is harmonic freedom that frees our minds from the debate scientists and philosophers have waged over the millennia. To see it from Dan Barker's perspective is to assert the truth of science and the truth of what it really means to be fully human. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a basic introduction to free will, as well as to those who are well seasoned in the field of the free will debate, and would like to see it from a fresh perspective.

Dan Barker never shies away from intricate philosophical probing; in fact he takes the issue of free will versus determinism to analogies with musical forms and other processes. Yet somehow Free Will Explained is never dry, never high-falutin'. He will share his thoughts about a chipmunk that intrudes upon his thinking time, giving the reader accessible, amusing personal anecdotes that explain concepts that would be incomprehensible in any other writer's hands.

I had high expectations when I began reading Dan Barker's book, "Free Will Explained." Being a firm non-believer in free will, I figured that Barker, an avowed atheist, would give free will the same de-bunking as Sam Harris and numerous other scientifically minded authors have.I'm a free will junkie.I find this subject fascinating. I've read most of the books that argue free will doesn't exist, even though we humans believe we possess it. So since the subtitle of Barker's book is How Science and Philosophy Converge to Create a Beautiful Illusion, I expected a rational, reasonable, factual explanation of not only why free will is an illusion, but the benefit of giving up a belief in it.Well, even before I got through the introduction, I found myself writing more and more question marks in the margins, because what Barker was saying made so little sense.He admits that free will is a fiction. Determinism rules through chains of causes and effects. So far, so good.Where Barker lost me is his contention that "Free will is a product of judgment." He claims that "free will is irrelevant -- it doesn't even exist -- until you judge behavior. It is a retroactive product of judgment."He's talking about a particular sort of judgment, moral judgments. Supposedly free will is a social truth, like marriage. Well, this goes against how almost everybody in the world, aside from Barker, I guess, looks upon free will.Almost everybody feels like they possess free will, even though it is an illusion. Likewise, almost everybody says "the sun is setting" rather than "the Earth is revolving." We feel like we have free will when we're alone, just as we see the sun setting when we're alone. If someone is by themselves on a desert island, they are still going to feel like they have free will, no moral judgement required.We choose a flavor of ice cream. We pick a book to buy. We decide where to go on vacation. None of these decisions entail making moral judgments, unless the meaning of "moral" is stretched far beyond its normal usage. I fail to see how a sense of free will only arises after a judgment is made, but this is a core tenet of Barker's book.Now, what bothers me the most about "Free Will Explained" isn't the crazy way Barker looks upon free will, but the implications he draws from that viewpoint. Unlike virtually every other author who writes about the illusion of free will, somehow Barker is simultaneously able to embrace the reality of determinism while also claiming that we are morally responsible for our actions."We can be completely unfree, yet also completely accountable for our own actions," he writes. Barker further asserts that "moral accountability only needs to go as far back in time as the mental decision to act was made."So even though someone's decision to rob a bank, say, was completely determined by their genetics, upbringing, and countless life experiences, Barker is fine with the justice system assuming that they possessed free will and could have chosen to not rob the bank. Hence, it is perfectly justified, in Barker's view, to exact retribution for freely willed acts, rather than viewing criminality as something that society needs to be protected from, and the criminal rehabilitated from.Barker goes so far as to write, "Yes, the brain tumor (or whatever) is one of the causes of the action, but the individual human being is the actual perpetrator. It is irrelevant to ask whether the person was ultimately free or not. We only assume the person was immediately free."Huh? Barker admits that free will is an illusion, It doesn't exist. Yet somehow he is OK with a judge or jury assuming that someone with a brain tumor was "immediately free" at the moment of making a decision, even though the tumor caused them to act in a certain unlawful way.One of the more annoying parts of Barker's book is when he raises the straw man of determinists failing to praise people or favoring moral education. He says that when his children took their first steps and he clapped his hands to congratulate them, "Should I have acted like a dull determinist and coldly remarked to my kids, 'That's no big deal. You had no choice'?"Geez. Barker doesn't understand how us determinists view reality. Everything at the level of everyday life is determined, everything! (I'm leaving out quantum phenomena, though arguably these also are determined, albeit in a probabilistic sense.)A determinist is going to praise their children because this is what they have been determined to do. If they don't, then they have been determined to do that. There's no getting outside of the bounds of determinism in our causal universe.At the end of his book Barker notes that "Free will is not a scientific truth, it is a social truth." Again, this doesn't make sense. An illusory sense of free will exists in humans because it has some sort of evolutionary advantage. This makes it a scientific truth. The illusion of free will also is a scientific truth, as Barker readily admits.Yet he persists in believing that it is better that people believe in the illusion, than in the truth. He appears to be fine with exacting retributive justice that is justified by a judge or jury assuming that someone possessed the free will to not commit a crime.Amazingly, Barker goes so far as to say, "Denying free will is a put-down to human nature." Wow. Discovering the truth that free will is an illusion is a put-down to human nature? I heartily disagree. For centuries people had the illusion that some races are superior to others, which justified slavery. They also had the illusion that women are the weaker sex and shouldn't be able to vote, among other consequences of that illusion.Belief in free will isn't an innocent illusion. It is used to justify harsh punishments, since our justice system is founded on an assumption that, aside from insanity, people are free to either commit a crime or refrain from that behavior. Books like the one Barker wrote aren't merely wrong, they are dangerous.

Valuable advise - This is one of those books that have you go nodding in agreement about how valuable its simple message is. Humble Inquiry is very relevant in the information age, not just for executives but especially for those in strategic product and program leadership roles. Design thinking relies on humble inquiry. This is a book that should be updated for the post IT revolution age.The challenge with the book is that it relies more on anecdotes and offers little in the form of a structured plan. If you read this book expecting some sort of framework or plan to strengthen your humble inquiry muscle, you'll be a bit disappointed. It seems that Edgar's videos are far more effective at communicating his message - The book would have benefitted from more crisp editing and structure. In some sense, I think the book will benefit from talking the author's advise and structuring around the 'Ask don't tell' model ..maybe a workbook structure that walked you through questions and then anecdotes to make specific points , will work better.

Schein hits a lot of points in only 110 pages, but you will need to go elsewhere for depth. I got more out of his video interview (link listed below).If you've done any reading on getting beyond ego, conflict resolution, or non-violent communication, much of the material in this book won't be new to you. For example, Schein describes the need for an attitude of genuine interest and curiosity, and describes ways to develop that attitude (e.g., reflection, mindfulness, artistic endeavors, building relationships). He discusses the importance of relationships, trust, vulnerability, and understanding feelings rather than suppressing them.What I found most interesting was his description of U.S. and management cultures, and the consequences they produce. He describes our culture as individualistic, competitive, optimistic, and pragmatic. Though we often espouse teamwork, in actuality we reward individualism. Overlain on that is our "culture of tell" - managers are supposed to know what to do, not ask questions. And subordinates often don't feel safe enough to speak up, so critical information gets withheld.If you're interested in this topic, I recommend this video interview with Schein on Culture, Leadership, & Humble Inquiry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MwebWXtKBsThe first 12 Â½ minutes were the most interesting to me. Schein talks about why upward communication is faulty and how that can yield safety problems, why employees should be treated like human beings, why the culture of "tell" doesn't work in a complex environment, and why managers should aim to be the orchestrator and not the "boss".

â€œHumble Inquiry is the skill and the art of drawing someone out, of asking questions to which you do not already know the answer, of building a relationship based on curiosity and interest in the other personâ€. (p 21)Schein clearly articulates the many benefits of his â€œHumble Inquiryâ€ method through relational examples and situational application across disciplines. To start, he defines what exactly â€œHumble Inquiryâ€ is, the art of asking with â€œhere and now humilityâ€ instead of telling in relationships. Schein defines three types of humility: basic humility, optional humility, and here and now humility. The other key facet of this perspective is the inquiry aspect. Schein insists that inquiry is both â€œan art and a scienceâ€. While inquiry and question formulation has been thoroughly researched, daily it is often overlooked within human interaction.Throughout the book, Schein provides examples of opportunities for â€œHumble Inquiryâ€, as well as missed opportunities. Through personal life examples in the text, we can see that â€œwhat we ask, how we ask it, where we ask it, and when we ask it all matterâ€ (pg. 19). Whether the situation is peer to peer, professor to student, CEO to Human Resources, or oncologist to patient, relationships are strengthened through humble inquiry. This tactic of building relationships increases trust amongst individuals.Scheinâ€™s writing style is simple enough for anyone to grasp the concept of the â€œHumble Inquiryâ€. He uses many examples throughout the novel to help bolster his argument. These examples show how a conversation can change for the better by using the â€œHumble Inquiryâ€ outlook. Additionally, by contrasting Humble Inquiry with other kinds of inquiry, Schein can further convey the benefits of humble inquiry in a variety of different settings.By conveying the message that the â€œHumble Inquiryâ€ is an attitude, Schein suggests that this concept is a lifestyle change. A change that will help build relationships and create a more thoughtful and productive work environment. Schein conveys the point that by â€œtellingâ€, we suggest that the other person did not know what we are trying to tell them. Instead, by â€œaskingâ€, we can communicate the same message while empowering the other person by making it seem as if they assisted in reaching the proposed verdict or conclusion. Schein proposes that everyone, not just managers and executives, take on this attitude. His â€œAsk donâ€™t tellâ€ model can be just as beneficial to subordinates as it can be to leaders Schein also gives practical advice on developing the attitude of Humble Inquiry in three main domains: 1) Personal life, to enable dealing with increasing culture diversity; 2) Organizations, to identify needs for collaboration among interdependent work units and to facilitate such collaboration; and 3) Role as leader or manager, to create the relationships and the climate to promote open communication needed for effective task performance (pg. 99).In summary, Scheinâ€™s ability to express the benefits of the â€œHumble Inquiryâ€ makes the read very worthwhile. Any workplace can use the â€œHumble Inquiryâ€ to increase trust, inspire coworkers, and create stronger bonds with each other. In his final thought, Schein, explains that we will all find ourselves from time to time â€œin situations that require innovation and some risk taking.â€ (pg 110) It is in these moments that Schein challenges us to â€œnot succumb to telling, but to take charge with Humble Inquiry.â€ (pg. 110). In a modern workplace culture where â€œtellâ€, not ask is all too often the norm, Scheinâ€™s book would be a fantastic resource for any company or individual that wants to take their relationships and organization to the next level.

About the Author

Larry Samovar, Emeritus Professor at San Diego State University, received his Ph.D. from Purdue University, where he taught for five years. He was also an invited scholar at Nihon University in Japan. As an early pioneer in the field of intercultural communication, he has been a guest speaker at many universities in the United States. I bought this affordable 8th edition text to supplement the e-text of the 9th edition that I am renting for a course. Sometimes I want to highlight and have a physical text. This edition is very different from the 9th edition. It has been changed a lot - good info, but I do not recommend it as a replacement for the 9th edition if you need it for a college class.

Read this for an Intercultural Communications course. I had a difficult time reading the print because it is too small and blue ink on white paper, not black and white. The only way I could read it is if I were sitting in a nearly sunlit area or had a bright white light, like LED and/or a lighted magnifying lens/lamp. The OTT light worked well.The information was interesting though, just too difficult to read under normal circumstances.

Great overview of cultures and cultural communication. However, the chapters on religion are rife with errors. Just the Christianity section alone had some grave errors concerning Christian theology. Then I read the Judaism section and found out later that there was an error about the sacred texts.However, don't let that stop you from using this textbook. The other chapters are a wealth of quality information.

I don't usually like text books, but this one is an exception. I get addicted to reading the content because it is written in a language 'normal people talk'. It is not so advanced that you need to research each word and it flows very well. If I didn't rent this book, I'd want to keep it for my own library. It is truly informative in learning how to communicate with others from a different culture.

Rented this book in my college class. I decided to buy it after, because it was great in defining cultures, and there is no bias like other college course books. It is good to have on hand if you are wanting an overview of other culture's religions, history, motives, etc.

Though my college course only had went through 8 chapters of this, it was an interesting read. I did manage to read it even tho I had completed the course.College store wanted over 120$ for used.

Exactly as expected

Terrible with conflicting ideas in the same chapter they are presented. Book came in terrible condition. I had better expectations for a book that is supposed to encourage respectful manners of communicating between cultures, but instead inadvertently insults cultures based on its hasty generalizations about a culture and its people.
