If you want to have a pleasant, relaxing, wine-fuelled Roman interlude that is... I bought this for my nine-year old daughter and then spent 3 days being marched all over Rome while she figured out every possible permutation of itinerary and points scores (also tremendously good for her math). Half of me was thrilled she was so inspired and half of me wanted to take it to the very heart of the Colosseum (4 points), stab it, burn it and gouge its eyes out :) This book is like sightseeing crack, perfectly pitched at 3rd to 6th graders, and Ms Aragon has pulled together some really interesting facts and cool things to locate, which kept the interest not just of my grade schooler but also of her exhausted parents. Thank goodness we only had three days to spend in Rome and very good walking shoes. Seriously you buy this book at your peril. Caveat emptor!

We looked for ways to keep our 9 year old interested during our family trip to Italy while we took many tours to explore the city! He absolutely loved this, and it kept him engaged and interested during the tours. Our tour guide even went out of her way to help him find things in the book.

We are currently in Rome using our mission book and we are LOVING it! All 4 of our kids (6, 8, 11, & 13) are having a blast looking for details and learning about the city of Rome. I couldn't have picked a better way to do the city. We have traveled many places in Europe and this book has given the kids a way to remember what they've seen and learned. It certainly makes it feel as if the trip was worth it for them as well. I only wish we had learned about this book before we visited London and Paris! We will be purchasing any city mission book for cities we visit in the future!

I got this for a trip to Rome when my daughter was 6. It helped to keep her entertained at some major tourist sites where she would have ordinarily been bored. In fact, we ended up staying longer at some places because she really wanted to find more items. I would say this is a good book for kids in elementary school. The older kids can do the scavenger hunts on their own. The younger kids will need you to read it for them if they aren't yet fluent readers. I enjoyed doing some of the activities with my daughter. It got me to notice some things I definitely would have missed otherwise, such as the drainage system in the Pantheon. I also like that the book is thin and light and packs easily.

Mission Rome is the third "Mission" book our family has completed (last summer we completed Amsterdam and Paris). We traveled with four children, ages seven to twelve. The Mission books give the kids a sense of purpose when we travel and distract them when they get cranky. We use metro rides or lunchtime to preview the next area that we're headed to and read the information in the book. I'll admit that occasionally the adults have to pull their interest in, but we motivate them to find all of the points with promises of gelato. They get pretty excited when they find what they're looking for. I appreciate how the books painlessly weave learning into the tasks so the kids are picking up a little history as they go. We only wish that there were more Mission books available.

If you have tween kids and are heading to Rome, this book is a godsend. Let's face it, churches and museums aren't that interesting when you're a kid, but this book's "missions" are just comprehensive enough to keep an 8-11 year old occupied at most of the city's famous sites, while not overwhelming him or her with information. Our daughter is 9 (and 1/2, as she reminds everyone) and has been racing around the city trying to amass as many points as possible. We definitely have seen some things that I doubt we would have without the information in this book. Take, for instance, the obelisk in the Piazza della Minerva around the corner from the Pantheon. Do you know what animal is supporting this particular obelisk? Neither would our family, if not for Mission Rome! While seemingly designed for tweens, I think this book would also be a great buy for slightly older or younger kids. The older ones might act like they're too cool, but I'm betting they'd get some useful information and amusement from it while the younger ones would definitely enjoy it, perhaps just a bit less independently from their parents.

This book transformed our kids' vacation experience! Instead of dragging bored kids around, we had enthusiastic, engaged participants. I wish there were one for everywhere we travel. It was fun and informative for the grown ups too! None of the activities required us to adjust our plans; it all fit seamlessly into the sightseeing we wanted to do. Our kids are 11, 7 and 4 -- it was fun for all of them.

Rome in a nutshell. This book was amazing for my daughter! She would look up the different landmarks in the book and try to locate them as we were strolling through Rome. A few times made us ask for directions to a specific landmark because she was determined to find everything in that book. We weren't able to "finish" the book in one day, had to go back the next day to see the rest of the landmarks. My favorite part was the different things they have you find inside the Colosseum. Great buy!

Where Is Easter Island?     It was Easter Sunday in April 1722. Jacob Roggeveen had been sailing for more than eight months. He was the commander of three Dutch ships. They were searching the South Pacific for parts of the world that had never been seen or explored. Roggeveen hoped to find a huge, legendary continent that many believed existed. It was called Terra Australis. Other explorers had searched parts of the South Pacific, but no one had found it yet, or mapped the area correctly.    That Easter Sunday, Roggeveen and his crew were a thousand miles from anywhere. Suddenly, they spotted land. What could it be? There was smoke rising in the distance, which meant people lived there. But what kind of people?    Some of the natives in the Pacific islands were peaceful and friendly. But others were not. Jacob Roggeveen had heard stories about cannibals! No one knew how his crew would be greeted by the islanders. Roggeveen decided it was better to wait until morning before he and his men went ashore. He named the island Paasch Eyland—the Dutch words for Easter Island—since that’s the day he had arrived.   The next morning, the weather was rainy—not the best time to put small boats into the water. And besides, his men were nervous. Maybe they should wait another day.   But natives on the island had seen the Dutch ships offshore and were eager to find out who these strange visitors were. So one of the island people got into a canoe. He paddled out to Roggeveen’s ship and climbed aboard. He was totally naked! He was also friendly and warmhearted. He danced and sang with the sailors. They played a violin for him and gave him small gifts, including a mirror and a pair of scissors. The man seemed so happy, he didn’t want to leave. They had to force him into his canoe to make him go back to the island. He motioned for them to follow.    It was several more days before the Dutch would finally set foot on the island. When they did, they found something amazing—something no one had ever seen or imagined.   Lining the beach were giant stone statues, as tall as three-story buildings. Some were twenty or thirty feet tall. Others were just huge heads, buried in the sand up to their necks.    How did the statues get there? Who carved them? The islanders had no modern tools. They had no carts with wheels. They lived in simple grass-covered huts. How could they possibly have carved these huge blocks of stone? How could they have moved such heavy pieces of stone at all?   Roggeveen saw only a few of the statues. He didn’t know there were more than nine hundred of them! They were scattered all over the island.   How they really got there, and why, is just part of the story—and the mystery—of Easter Island.     Chapter 1: Stranded on a Remote Island     Easter Island is in the middle of nowhere. If you look at a map of the world, the island is so tiny, it’s barely even a dot. Lost in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean, it’s more than two thousand miles west of South America. The nearest islands are the Pitcairn Islands—more than a thousand miles away. Easter Island is so far away from anywhere else, it’s hard to imagine how the earliest people ever found it.    So how did human beings discover the most remote island on earth?   No one is certain, but it is believed that about four thousand years ago, the people who lived in Taiwan began to spread out. They were searching for new places to live. Over many hundreds of years, they sailed from place to place throughout Southeast Asia. They took food and supplies with them and planted crops when they arrived. They formed new colonies on many of the islands in the South Pacific. Those islands are now called Polynesian islands. Hawaii, Tahiti, and New Zealand were also colonized this way.   But Easter Island was so far away, it was one of the last islands to be inhabited. Between 1,200 and 800 years ago, the first Polynesian people reached it and decided to live there. They probably came from Mangareva—an island more than a thousand miles away. Sailing in open double-hulled canoes, they braved the ocean waters. As many as twenty or thirty people crowded into each canoe. They brought with them chickens, bananas, sugar cane, and taro—a sweet root vegetable like a sweet potato.    The Polynesian people were excellent sailors. They knew how to use the stars to guide them and the ocean currents and winds to sail fast. Still, the trip to Easter Island took at least three weeks—maybe longer. When they finally found the island, they gave it a name, Te Pito o te Henua, which meant “the navel of the world” or “the end of the world.” Years later, they named the island Rapa Nui. Rapa Nui means “greater extremity” or “land’s end”—as in the end of the land—the farthest thing from anything else. The people who live on the island are called the Rapa Nui people, and the language they speak has the same name.   When the Polynesians arrived, they brought with them their customs and beliefs. They didn’t believe in gods. Instead, they thought that their ancestors—family members who had lived before them—had special divine powers. They believed that those ancestors could keep them safe, make food grow, and keep them healthy. They carved wooden statues of their ancestors and put them on stone altars. They didn’t worship them like gods, but they did perform special ceremonies to show their respect. Their living leaders were always the descendants—the sons—of these ancestors.    The island the first settlers discovered was covered in huge palm trees, at least ninety feet tall. It looked like a paradise. There was plenty of shade from the hot sun. The trees created a rain forest, too. Rain was important for drinking water, and to make the crops grow.    There was food for the first Polynesian settlers, too. They found millions of birds on the islands and hundreds of fish in the sea. Until the first crops grew, they ate fish, birds, dolphins, and birds’ eggs. Some of the birds were so tame, they would land on the islanders’ heads. For a while, the island must have been a lovely place to live.   But it wouldn’t be a paradise forever.   Within four hundred years, nearly all the trees on the island were gone. Without trees, the islanders had no firewood. They couldn’t build new canoes or grass huts. The sun beat down on the land, drying it out. Crops wouldn’t grow, because there wasn’t enough rain. The birds disappeared, too. It was hard to catch fish without canoes. Without new canoes, they couldn’t even leave!   The islanders were stranded.   What had turned this beautiful place into a parched, dry, miserable island? The answer was something the islanders may have brought with them when they sailed to Easter Island.   Rats!

These series of Where Is, What Was, Who Was are all just terrific for children. I'm pleased they are publishing the non fiction books about places and history, and topics of interest to students. They are illustrated nicely and the format of the book is appealing to children.

Great gift!

My students always want to learn more than what's on the curriculum...The Where Is series give us lots of great options to do research.

I didn't realize this book was written for grade schoolers. The "A Companion to Easter Island" book was a much better purchase. Also checking the internet for videos was very helpful.

I was interested in viewing lighthouse architecture design brought about by the physical location. If circumstances had been different, perhaps one of these marvelous structures could have been called home. There were a lot of unfilled memories between the pages.

Bought as birthday gift for my husband. Beautiful book - we plan to travel America and kiss at the top of every lighthouse when we retire.

Excellent photos.

Beautiful book. Looks stunning on a cocktail table.

This book was a big hit with a dear friend who loves lighthouses. The pictures are gorgeous. The text is thoughtful and well presented but not too long. It would make a great gift for someone new to New England and the coast.

He was mesmerized. The pictures are great! We had seen a copy in a doctor's office e and thought it would make a perfect gift. And it did

Great pictures--good all around book

This book was good for simple, basic overheads for patios and/or decks. It gave some limited plans and recommendations for lumber. It also listed a variety of roofing materials but was somewhat unspecific on the pros and cons of each. We liked what the book did offer, but finished it feeling rather unsatisfied.

Helpful information, but not as good as "Gazebos & Other Structures". I'm not sure that the editors actually have built any of the structures described. Lots of cutesy California designs. Great photos of construction techniques, some of which could be challenged.

Item as described. Thank you

Great ideas and Photos.

GoooooD
